With improved transportation, today's rural areas look completely different from the past. In Zhongshan, we visited two very special villages that offer more natural environments, more authentic and diverse original foods, and a more leisurely pace of life with rich historical and cultural heritage. Here's a two-day, one-night leisure rural tour guide to Zhongshan for you to keep!
Day 1:
Yongmo Village, Sanxiang Town, Zhongshan
A thousand-year-old village that produced "the first person to open his eyes to see the world"
Yongmo Village is located in the northeast of Sanxiang Town, Zhongshan City. Known as an overseas Chinese hometown, it's a key rural tourism village in China and a cultural and tourism featured village in Guangdong Province.
Historical Background:
Yongmo Village was established during the Northern Song Dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, Zheng Bingchang (courtesy name Zigang, pen name Yongmo) moved from Qiaotou to settle at the current location. He was known for his filial piety and charitable deeds. The villagers, appreciating his virtues, built the Yongmo Temple in the western part of the village and named the village after his pen name. Honghua Village was renamed Yongmo Village, a name that continues to this day.
Famous People and Works:
Yongmo Village has produced many talented individuals, including Zheng Guanying, a famous modern Chinese bourgeois reformist thinker. Zheng Guanying is known as "the first person in China to open his eyes to see the world," and his work "Warnings to a Prosperous Age" profoundly influenced modern China.
Historical and Cultural Relics:
1) The Qi'ao Ancient Road, built in the 10th year of Emperor Xianfeng's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1860), has a history of over 150 years and spans about 70 kilometers. Many first-generation overseas Chinese followed this road to Hong Kong, Macau, or overseas, earning it the nickname "Xiangshan's Tea Horse Ancient Road."
2) Zheng Guanying's Former Residence, built in the 29th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1903), is now a provincial-level cultural relic protection site with significant aesthetic and craftsmanship value, representing an irreplaceable historical and cultural resource.
3) Yongmo Village Rural Library, adjacent to the site of Dongshan Academy, features the main building Yunzhuang Zheng Ancestral Hall built during the Qing Dynasty, with an elegant and classical style.
4) The Xibao Zheng Family Residential Complex, a Qing Dynasty ancient residential area, showcases distinctive Lingnan architectural features.
Other Tourism Resources:
1) China's first Sino-foreign cooperative tourism enterprise - Zhongshan Hot Spring Hotel
2) The first golf course in the Chinese mainland - Zhongshan Hot Spring Golf Course
Day 2:
Yakou Village, Nanlang Street, Zhongshan
Rice field scenery more beautiful than Taiwan's Brown Avenue
Historical Background:
After the opening of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, Yakou Village experienced an explosion in popularity. With 2,000 mu of rice fields, boutique homestays, leisure cafes, and delicious seafood, it has become a popular check-in spot, attracting many visitors.
Recommended Village Cafe: Heyue Coffee, located right next to the rice fields. Sitting in the cafe, you can enjoy the rice field scenery at any time - lush green in spring and summer, golden yellow in late summer and autumn. With gentle breezes and the aroma of coffee in the air, many people can spend an entire afternoon here just daydreaming. This place is even more beautiful than Taiwan's Brown Avenue.
Recommended Food: Food Street, which attracts many visitors from Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau every weekend. Guangliang Claypot Rice is one of the popular representatives, with visitors lining up for authentic claypot rice with a strong pot aroma. Because of its proximity to Lingding Ocean, Zhongshan's seafood is also fresh and delicious.
Recommended Homestay: Wild Courtyard Homestay, a detached villa with an excellent environment where every breath is filled with freshness. Advance booking is recommended as it's usually fully booked on weekends.
Recommended Transportation: Walking along the village road or renting a bicycle are both excellent options, allowing you to experience the quiet, slow-paced rural life in a relaxed manner.
