Feeling Foxy at Zao Fox Village
Visiting Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture was like stepping into a magical world! The village is home to over 100 foxes that roam freely in a beautiful mountain setting.
When I entered the main enclosure, I was amazed to see foxes of all colors—red, silver, and white—playing, lounging, and curiously watching visitors. Some were curled up in the sun, while others dashed around, leaving tiny paw prints in the snow.
Feeding the foxes was a highlight! From a safe platform, I dropped treats for them and watched as they excitedly jumped and yipped. It was adorable and fascinating at the same time.
The village also had signs explaining foxes’ importance in Japanese culture, which added a nice touch to the experience. The staff were friendly and made sure both the visitors and the foxes were safe.
If you love animals or want a unique adventure, Zao Fox Village is a must-visit. Don’t forget your camera—you’ll want to capture these magical moments!
Tips:
Visit in winter for a snowy wonderland.
Wear comfy shoes; the paths can be uneven.
Follow the rules to keep the foxes and yourself safe.

A fox village worth a visit🦊🦊
There are not many people in the Zao Fox Village. Villagers remind visitors not to play with their mobile phones after entering because the foxes will bite them. 📱Remember not to get too close to a fox, because it will bite you, and don't reach out to touch a fox unless you don't want your hands anymore.
Foxes can be divided into two categories: the good-looking foxes are tied at the door with a nameplate next to them, and the rough-looking native foxes are raised freely in the woods. The weather was very cold and the foxes were all sleeping. Looking around, the forest was full of furry balls, so cute! In addition to foxes, there are also rabbits in the garden.
There is a fox hugging experience at around 2pm, where each person can hug a big fat fox. Frankly speaking, the foxes used for the experience cannot be called relatives, but they are extremely obedient when being rubbed, which is completely different from the foxes that fight each other in the woods.
The point is that surprisingly, foxes don’t stink, and their smell is almost the same as that of cats. So there is a sign at the entrance of Fox Village: "If you smell something, it's not the smell of foxes, it's the smell of the pig farm below. Foxes don't stink at all, only pigs do!" 🤣🤣
