Yue Fei Temple, originally named Jingzhong Temple, is located at No. 84, Yue Temple Street, Tangyin County, Anyang City, Henan Province. It was built by the people to commemorate the national hero Yue Fei.
Yue Fei, courtesy name Pengju, was a native of Tangyin and a famous general of the Song Dynasty. He was born in the second year of Chongning in the Northern Song Dynasty (1103) and was wrongfully executed in the 11th year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1142). In the first year of Longxing (1163), he was exonerated. He was posthumously awarded the titles of King Wumu, King of E, and King Zhongwu.
The temple was built in the first year of Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty (1450) and has been repaired several times. It now has more than 90 rooms, including Jingzhong Archway, Imperial Stele Pavilion, Main Hall, East and West Wing Rooms, and Sleeping Hall, and nearly 200 steles from different dynasties. It is valuable for the study of architecture and calligraphy, and especially for patriotic education. In 1958, the Yue Fei Memorial Hall was established, and in 1963, the original Provincial People's Committee announced it as the first batch of cultural relics protection units in Henan Province. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the people's government allocated funds for renovation several times.

📍 Yue Fei Temple in Tangyin, formerly known as Jingzhong Temple, also known as Song Yue Zhongwu King Temple, stands majestically to commemorate the national hero Yue Fei. Covering an area of 18,100 square meters, it is one of the four major Yue Temples in China.🏛️
🏛️ First Stop: The Solemn Temple Gate
The temple faces south with a rigorous layout, and the outer corridor is rectangular, exuding solemnity. In the center of the archway, the inscription 'Song Yue Zhongwu King Temple' shines brightly, written by Emperor Xiaozong of Ming, Zhu Youtang. On both sides of the eight-character walls, the blue stone tablets are engraved with the words 'Loyalty' and 'Filial Piety,' each word carrying immense weight.
🗡️ Second Stop: The Righteous Indignation of Shi Quan Shrine
Entering Shi Quan Shrine, the bronze statue of Shi Quan stands imposingly. In front of it, the iron kneeling statues of the five traitors, including Qin Hui, are bound and bowed, attracting visitors to spit on them to vent their ancient anger.
🎖️ Third Stop: The Majestic Sitting Statue of Yue Fei
In the center of the main hall, the colorful sitting statue of Yue Fei stands tall, several feet high, with a heroic and righteous demeanor. Above it hangs a large plaque with the words 'Return My Rivers and Mountains,' full of lofty aspirations. The couplets on both sides, written by General Zhang Aiping, read: 'The bloody battle at Zhuxian Town frightened the enemy, the long hatred at Fengbo Pavilion left a thousand years of regret,' each word bleeding, deeply moving.
👩👧👦 Fourth Stop: The Teachings of the Virtuous Mother Shrine
Inside the Virtuous Mother Shrine, the mother of Yue Fei, Yao Shi, is enshrined. The statue of Yue Fei's mother tattooing 'Loyalty to the Country' on his back is delicate and vivid, not only a treasure of art but also the source of Yue Fei's spirit.

Serve the country with the utmost loyalty
Yue Fei was from Tangyin in Henan, and the story of his mother tattooing the words 'Serve the country with the utmost loyalty' on his back took place in the old Yue family house in Tangyin. After Yue Fei was wrongfully killed, people built the Jingzhong Temple (the time of initial construction is unknown) on the foundation of the old Yue family house to commemorate him. Over time and through wars, the temple gradually fell into ruin. It was rebuilt in the first year of the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1450 AD), and since then, it has been expanded and repaired by successive generations, resulting in its current state. The temple not only worships Yue Fei but also his descendants and relatives. Many famous people from different generations have left their inscriptions and steles here, totaling nearly 400 pieces. Emperor Qianlong also left a poem inscribed on a stele when he came to pay his respects.
There are three Yue Fei Temples, located in Tangyin, Henan (birthplace), Zhuxian Town, Kaifeng (battlefield), and Hangzhou (place of harm), to commemorate the anti-Jin hero Yue Fei.
The construction time of Yue Fei Temple in Tangyin is unknown, but the main building preserved today was rebuilt in the first year of Ming Jingtai (1450) and has been maintained since then.
The architectural complex is structured in two routes. The left route consists mainly of Jingzhong Archway, Mountain Gate, Imperial Stele Pavilion, Main Hall, Yue Yun Shrine, Four Sons Shrine, and Xiao E Shrine. The right route is for commemorating Yue Fei's parents and ancestors, with the remains of Yue Mother's Tattoo Shrine, Three Generations Shrine, etc. The two routes are interconnected.
Jingzhong Archway is the gate of Yue Fei Temple, facing west, is a Ming-style wooden structure archway, with a nine-step four-angled heavy eave roof; the archway is engraved with the title 'Song Yue Zhongwu Wang Temple' given by Ming Xiaozong Zhu Youzhang, and the two characters 'loyalty' and 'filial piety' are engraved on the eight-character wall with bluestone steles, each character is 1.8 meters high, vigorous and dignified.
At the entrance is the Shi Quan Shrine. In front of the shrine are five cast iron kneeling statues of Qin Hui, Wang, Wan Sizhen, Zhang Jun, and Wang Jun; inside the shrine is a statue of Shi Quan, holding a demon-slaying sword, glaring at the villains. Shi Quan was originally a military officer in Yue Fei's army and wanted to assassinate Qin Hui to avenge Yue Fei's death, but was killed by the treacherous officials.
Through the Qianlong Imperial Stele Pavilion, we come to the main hall. Hanging in front of the main hall door are five huge plaques, namely 'Nai Wu Nai Wen', 'Hometown Zuzhou', 'Loyal Spirit Shows Min', 'Hundred Battles Jingwei', and 'Qiankun Zhengqi'. Among them, 'Hundred Battles Shenwei' and 'Loyal Spirit Wei Min' were inscribed by Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing Dynasty.
In the center of the main hall is a colored statue of Yue Fei, over a foot tall, heroic and imposing, with a righteous aura. Hanging above is the 'Return My Rivers and Mountains' gold-plated giant plaque, written by Yue Fei. The beautifully painted beams and columns in the hall reflect the people's respect for Yue Fei.
The other side halls are dedicated to Yue Fei's generals, children, parents, and ancestors, with recent statues that are quite lifelike.
