Chengdu 1h | Visit the ancient town known as the 'Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival'
I want to say, this is a place 'with wind'. It only takes about an hour to get there from Chengdu, and the scenery along the way is also very beautiful, especially a path like a green forest (if you don't take the highway) which is super nice!!!
📍 | Yuantong Ancient Town
A very quaint and ancient town that is not overly commercialized, retaining the characteristics and atmosphere of the old streets, but it is not lacking in delicious food and fun. Inside, there are coffee shops, tea houses, milk tea shops, and various snack shops...
🧩 | Recommended Check-in
You can see the attractions in the picture as long as you follow the old town
Catholic Church, Huang's Mansion, Xia's Teahouse, Guangdong Guild Hall, etc... are all great places for photography~ Keep walking inside and you can reach the riverside, quietly enjoying the sound of the water and the scenery in front of you
🍜 | Food Recommendations
✔️ Yang's Bowl Rice Super tasty and very cheap
✔️ Wild Boar Coffee (great value for money and a good place to quietly space out)
✔️ Xia's Teahouse (right by the river, many people go for tea so get there early)
✔️ Yuantong Soybean Flower (the bean curd is fragrant and tender, other dishes are also not bad)
✔️ Yuan's Sichuan Pepper Duck (don't miss it if you like braised flavors, the duck is very flavorful)
✔️ And many more snacks (frozen cake, yerba mate, fried dough balls, etc... too many to finish)
Definitely, definitely, definitely bring mosquito repellent spray! There are a lot of mosquitoes!
Finally, pack up and go experience 'Thousand-Year Chengdu'~
Hungry Journeys
There is actually an ancient town that has 'lived' for 1676 years!
There are many ancient towns in Western Sichuan, but some are over-commercialized and restored to look brand new; some are small and poorly preserved—Yuantong Ancient Town offers a good comprehensive experience.
🔸 There are many old buildings where you can witness the historical changes
The town already had settlements during the Eastern Han Dynasty, and in the third year of Yonghe of the Jin Dynasty (347 AD), it established a township system, which has been 1676 years to date.
After the migration of people from Huguang to Sichuan, merchants from various provinces and Western missionaries flooded in, and guild halls, churches, and mansions were built one after another... In 1940, it was named Yuantong, which has been used to this day.
🔹 The number of tourists is just right, and the food is delicious and affordable
Yuantong Ancient Town is built along the Xi River, about 1km long, with countless alleys and deep houses connecting the main street and the riverbank.
【Qilin Street】 is the most lively, with better restoration of ancient houses; 【Shuangfeng Street】 is starting to 'residentialize', with less than half of the shops open; 【Banbian Street】 and 【Dongsheng Street】 are rarely visited by tourists, with old houses sporadically inhabited.

📍 Luo's Ancestral Home
Built in the mid-Qing Dynasty, its highlight is the two gates, which have Gothic-style lines, but the details are traditional Chinese.
📍 Catholic Church
Built in 1903, it is a blend of Chinese and Western styles, with a small square in front, which is especially photogenic.
📍 Huang's Mansion
The best-preserved mansion, combining Chinese and Western styles, with a story.
📍 Xizi Palace
Originally a famous Taoist temple in Western Sichuan, now only the ancient well and other original objects remain, and the character tower is newly built.
📍 Huijiang Bridge
A famous iron bridge in Western Sichuan, moved to its current location in 1986.
The bridge has three piers and four arches, with a pavilion on each pier and at both ends, totaling five, carved with various figures, flowers, and birds.
📍 Guangdong Guild Hall
Yuantong once had several guild halls, but by the mid-20th century, except for the three arches of the Guangdong Guild Hall, the rest of the guild hall buildings no longer exist, and now they are restored to their original appearance based on the remaining gate walls.
📍 Ancient Pawnshop
A small corner, but very interesting.
The roof is Gothic, with bas-relief scroll flowers, Roman columns supporting the flying eaves, and the plaque reads 'Bright Wind and Clear Moon', with Latin inscriptions on the lintel—this was a pawnshop opened by the French in Yuantong.
📍 Yongli Bridge
Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, it was rebuilt during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty, and it is the only remaining stone bridge in Chongzhou.
The bridge piers are two dragons, with the dragon heads facing north and the tails to the south, making the entire bridge look as if it is lying on the back of a dragon.
📍 Chen's Mansion
Adjacent to Yongli Bridge, the outer perimeter is the abandoned Rongjunyuan (once used as a healing place for soldiers who were wounded and retired from the Korean War).
The high walls of the courtyard have a grand air, and it is said that dozens of rooms were all paved with nanmu wood flooring, but now one can only stand in the desolate and dilapidated courtyard and imagine.

🚌 Transportation
1h drive from Chengdu, take the high-speed train/bus to Chongzhou Station and transfer to bus 306.
🦐 Cuisine
'Yuantong's Four Delicacies': pig's trotters, oil flower, brain flower, and tofu flower.
Reputable restaurants: Wuge Gongzui, Huang's Trotters, Yangji Bowl Rice, He Xuewang, Sange Restaurant.
🐱 Miao had He Xuewang, four dishes for 90, the blood curd was so tender that it could only be scooped with a slotted spoon, and the stir-fried bamboo shoots with pig's mouth were crispy.
Yeba and frozen cake are outside the archway on Wenhua Street 'Huaiyuan Sanjue', scoring 80, slightly inferior to Xinchang Ancient Town; 'Banbian Street Duck' claims to be an old shop, but it doesn't feel as good as Pengzhou duck; next to the Catholic Church, 'Caozi Cake' is good.

A lesser-known ancient town trip around Chengdu: Yuantong Ancient Town and Yuantong Tower
👉Yuantong Ancient Town, a lesser-known ancient town in Chengdu with a history of over 1600 years, is surrounded by water on three sides and mountains on one side. The Wenjing River, Wei River, and Bo River converge here. The town's buildings are built along the river, with thousands of households living by the river. The constant flow of merchants has earned it the reputation of 'a miniature Chengdu of a thousand years, and a Qingming River Map'. Among them, the eight-story classical tower adorned with grey glazed tiles, Yuantong Tower, is the most eye-catching landmark.
🗼The Yuantong Tower is hexagonal, seven stories high, and stands at the river mouth, with a majestic presence. It quietly guards the ancient town with the rising and setting sun, while the river beneath it rushes day and night, flowing endlessly. A gentle breeze in winter brings the crisp sound of bells from the tower, crystal clear, instantly bridging the distance between the ancient town and the mundane world. Standing on the tower, one can see the whole view of the ancient town. The ancient town is indeed an ancient town, but the Yuantong Tower was rebuilt according to historical records, standing next to the ancient town without any disharmony.
🛣️Passing the Yuantong Tower, crossing the earliest iron bridge in western Sichuan - Huijiang Bridge, and entering the long old streets and alleys of the ancient town, there is a real small town atmosphere. The crisscrossing old stone streets connect the quiet alleys and old houses of the ancient town. The strong sense of life here and the unique leisure and ease of Chengdu are a perfect match.
🎟Admission: Free.
🚏Address: Yuantong Ancient Town, Culture Street, Chongzhou City, Chengdu.
🧀Food recommendation: Don't worry if you're tired from walking around the ancient town, there are all kinds of pepper chicken, pepper duck, sesame cake, spring rolls, tofu brain, ice fermented glutinous rice, crispy cake, bowl rice, leaf cake... If you can't finish eating, take a portion to go. The pepper duck can be vacuum-packed and kept for a week without any problem.

I was amazed by this ancient town around Chengdu|||🏠Yuantong Ancient Town
It's quite shameful to say that I've been living in Chengdu for nearly 20 years, passed by countless times, and then went to the neighboring Jiezi Ancient Town. I regret not coming earlier. This is my first time to Yuantong Ancient Town and I was amazed. The buildings here are all preserved from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and are intact. Compared with the hustle and bustle of other ancient towns, there is more tranquility here.
🧧As the New Year is approaching, the streets of the ancient town are full of lanterns🏮, adding a bit of New Year flavor. If you also like quiet ancient towns, I suggest you come for a visit, or find a teahouse by the river at some dusk, and enjoy the slow time in Chengdu with friends.

Yuantong Ancient Town in Chongzhou, Sichuan | Luo Family Courtyard, Huang Family Courtyard, Kirin Street, Zengfu Street, Pepper Duck
Yuantong Ancient Town is located in Chongzhou City, Chengdu, only 38 kilometers away from Chengdu city center, with very convenient transportation. It is said that this was an important wharf established during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and was once one of the most prosperous markets in Sichuan, known as 'Little Chengdu'. Here, three rivers converge, forming a unique waterscape.
Yuantong Ancient Town is built by the water. The Wenjing River, Wei River, and Bo River, which originate from the Longmen Mountain Range, converge here. It was an important wharf in history and has been around for more than 1600 years. It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there was a monk named Yuantong who was very accomplished. People later built bridges and temples to commemorate him, hence the name of the town.
The main attractions of Yuantong Ancient Town include Xizi Palace, Yuantong Catholic Church, Yongli Bridge, Old Wharf, Luo Family Courtyard, Huang Family Courtyard, Huang Family Ancestral Hall, Wang Guoying's Former Residence, Guangzhou Guild Hall, etc. There are Kirin Street, Yongquan Street, and Zengfu Street on the east side; Shuangfeng Street, Dongsheng Street, and Banbian Street on the west side.
Most of the buildings in Yuantong Ancient Town are left over from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many houses are built by the river, giving a sense of Jiangnan. The houses by the river are layered, giving a sense of hierarchy.
Located at No. 117 Kirin Street, the 'Luo Family Courtyard' is a mansion. It is one of the best-preserved buildings in western Sichuan and a typical commercial building from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. There are two courtyards in the mansion, both of which are one-story buildings, quite grand.
'Huang Family Courtyard' is on the left side of Yuantong Wharf, separated from Luo Family Courtyard by a wall. Also known as 'General's Mansion', it was built in 1941 and was the mansion of Huang Runyu, the brigade commander of the Independent Artillery Brigade of the 24th Army of the National Revolutionary Army. There are two complete buildings from the Republic of China period in the courtyard, one is the main hall, brick and wood structure; the other is the chanting tower, a western-style small building with a Chinese-style roof.
There are many special snacks in Yuantong Ancient Town. Tofu flower, oil flower, hoof flower, and brain flower are known as 'Yuantong Four Flowers' and are worth tasting. The 'Different from Zongzi' pepper duck next to Huijiang Bridge is very popular, and the front of the shop is full of customers waiting to buy.

Chengdu 1H | Offbeat and Light Hiking 🌿 Super Cool and Easy on the Legs ‼️
Today I recommend a cool oxygen-absorbing route🌳 with a high vegetation coverage and full shade of trees💦. It's only a 1-hour🚘 drive from Chengdu, with few people and easy parking. You can drink tea🧋, have a picnic, and walk your children and dogs?? It's very suitable for friends who want to embrace the mountains and nature, but don't want to go too far or get too tired, and just want to relax.
✅✅Reasons for recommendation:
1⃣️Towering ancient trees, super cool. The entire hiking route is almost covered by the 🍃trees, with lush greenery and negative ions filling the mountains, making people feel relaxed and comfortable both physically and mentally.
2⃣️A thousand-year-old ancient temple, the tree king of Tianfu, is hidden in a dense forest on a stone staircase. The ancient temple, Daming Temple🛕, was built in the Sui Dynasty. On both sides of the Zen courtyard are two 1500-year-old ancient cypresses, which have been rated as one of the "Top Ten Tree Kings of Tianfu". It is said that Lu You once visited here and left the eternal masterpiece "The lonely tower rises into the sky, and the twin cypresses withstand the summer cold".
4️⃣️Enjoy the secluded mountains and forests even on holidays like May Day, with only a few people drinking tea and chatting in temples. There are no noisy crowds or traffic, only birds 🦜 and cicadas singing happily in the woods. 5️⃣️Rich routes, leisurely and comfortable.
The entire route takes about 2 hours round trip; it passes through cement roads, stone paths, and forest trails; there are also bamboo forests, pine forests, and Chinese fir trees along the way, providing a rich experience; there are free parking lots at the foot of the mountain and in the temple; there are pavilions and stone benches along the way, perfect for picnics and tea.
⛳️Address: Huacheng Mountain, Chongzhou 🎫No admission fee, no parking fee.
🚘Driving: Navigate to Chongzhou Daming Temple, about 1 hour drive.
🚌Public transportation: Take the high-speed train to Chongzhou Station in Chengdu, transfer to bus 306 to Huaiyuan Ancient Town; take a taxi to Daming Temple for about 12 yuan.
🌿The most beautiful part of the entire route is the section leading to the Daming Temple. Those who don't want to walk can have tea and chat inside the temple; those who want to hike can go up the mountain from behind the Daming Temple, following the red trail markers all the way to the top. There is no stunning scenery at the top of the mountain, just pure and cool leisurely hiking.
♨️Nearby attractions: Huaiyuan Ancient Town, Yanhuachi, and Yuantong Ancient Town are all close by and can be linked together for play.

🎈There are more mosquitoes, it is recommended to wear long pants, mountain shoes, and bring mosquito repellent.
