Pingyao lacquerware originated in the Kaiyuan period of the Tang dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has a history of 1,200 years and is one of the four major lacquer arts in China. It has always been a famous product of Shanxi, the first of the three treasures of Pingyao, and a world intangible cultural heritage, a treasure of the times that has been passed down for thousands of years.
