Guangdong Tourism|Chaozhou Ancient City Niche Attractions-Chaozhou Haiyang County Confucianism Palace
Strolling through the ancient city of Chaozhou, you will find cultural relics and historical sites everywhere. On the west side of Zhenhai Tower, there is a Haiyang County Confucian Palace, which was the place for academic research in the ancient city. The academy is clearly located in the ancient city of Chaozhou, so why is it called Haiyang County Academy instead of Chaozhou Academy?
This is a paid attraction and you need to buy a ticket to visit. Behind the Lingxing Gate is a white marble statue of Confucius, which depicts the ancient teacher Confucius teaching. Behind the statue of Confucius are two semicircular pools, which are the Pan Pools. The bridge in Panchi is called Pan Bridge, also known as Zhuangyuan Bridge. In ancient times, people had to walk around it. Nowadays, students are vying to walk on it in the hope of good luck.
Behind the Panchi is the Dacheng Gate. Passing through the Dacheng Gate, there is a patio inside. Opposite it is the Dacheng Hall, and on both sides are veranda halls. The Dacheng Hall is the main building of the academy, which houses a statue of Confucius. The Dacheng Hall is built in the Ming Dynasty architectural style. It is seven bays wide and five bays deep, with a double-eaved hip roof. In ancient times, this was a palace style that only emperors could use. The statue of Confucius in the main hall is in the shape of an emperor, which shows how much people respect him.
So, what about Haiyang County? It turns out that for more than two thousand years, Haiyang has always been the seat of the prefecture or county here. It was not until the third year of the Republic of China (1914) that it was renamed Chao'an because it had the same name as Haiyang County in Shandong.
Haiyang Academy was first built in the Song Dynasty and rebuilt during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. Although it has been expanded and renovated throughout the dynasties, it has generally maintained its Ming Dynasty architectural style. Today, the area of the academy is only 4,000 square meters, but it used to be much larger, about three times its current size.
