It has the world's tallest and largest roundhouses, a low-key small city of Jiangxi's cultural ancient architecture 🎊. It took a full 29 years to build, with 282 rooms inside 📖. Just the bricks and tiles used for the construction of the roundhouse took 19 years to fire 🕰️. The layout of the houses is longitudinal, and in the rooms, you can see the ancient study rooms, boudoirs, and beds 🛏️. The gaps in the ancestral hall are very tight, and there are still local residents raising chickens and ducks here 🐔, and there is a rare living water ancient well in the roundhouse 💧. Hidden in the mountains of Ganzhou, this "castle" is the first time I've seen a 14-meter-high city wall complete with a defensive system in China! This is the Yangcun Yanyiwei located in Longnan County, Ganzhou. Location: Yangcun Yanyiwei, Longnan County, Jiangxi Province, Ganzhou It's a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Shenzhen, or a 3-hour drive. There's parking available, and guesthouses nearby. Admission: Free The site was originally built during the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty (around 1650) by a local wealthy individual. The wall is 14 meters high, 41 meters long, and 31.8 meters wide, and it even has guard towers and gun emplacements. It is the tallest existing Hakka walled house, with the thickest walls and strongest defenses. It's worth taking a stroll down the nearby alleys, which are full of character. The local specialty here is rice wine, which you can take home with you; it tastes amazing. There aren't many tourists here, and nearby you can also visit Taiping Bridge and Wushiwei, which are both Hakka-style buildings. They're very close, just a 10-minute drive away. Yanyi Enclosure and Wushi Enclosure are 5 kilometers apart, located in the southern part of Longnan City, adjacent to Lianping County of Heyuan, Guangdong. They are two original ecological Hakka enclosures in southern Jiangxi. Yanyi Enclosure was built during the Shunzhi and Kangxi periods (1650–1677) of the Qing Dynasty. It is the tallest and has the thickest walls among the existing Hakka enclosures, as well as the most robust defense system in the southern Jiangxi enclosures. Its layout emphasizes a rigorous structure to enhance defensive capabilities, with only a spacious courtyard paved with pebbles inside. Wushi Enclosure, also known as Panshi Enclosure, is named after a toad-shaped black stone in front of the enclosure's gate. It was built during the Wanli period (1583–1610) of the Ming Dynasty and is the oldest existing Hakka enclosure in southern Jiangxi. Inside the enclosure, there is a quadrangle courtyard with exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, and gable craftsmanship. Yanyiwei is located in Yangcun Town, Longnan City, Ganzhou City. It was first built in the third year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty and completed in the seventh year of Daoguang. It is the largest, best-preserved, most functional and representative dwelling among the Hakka enclosed houses in southern Jiangxi. It integrates residences, ancestral halls, castles, and academies, and can also be used as a fortified city during times of war. A half-moon pool was dug directly in front of the gate, symbolizing wealth gathering. The Half-Moon Pond is connected to the pond outside the east wall, forming a water barrier, which is also conducive to the military defense of the new wall. Climbing up the stairs, I saw compartments that looked like single dormitories, with thin partitions and no privacy for the people living there. I realized how difficult it was for the Hakkas back then. There are shooting holes all over the enclosed house. I am lucky to be born in peaceful times. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, society completely collapsed. Everything was a last resort! They made every effort and invested millions of silver dollars just to build this family shelter. In addition, Longnan also has the world's tallest curtain, Nie Yiwei, which is 14.3 meters high and has a history of more than 340 years. In a peaceful environment, its unique red lanterns and wooden doors show the Hakka style. Some people describe Longnan as an ancient Roman castle in the East. In this small town, 376 Weilou have gathered hundreds of different architectural forms from all over the world.
