A Local Day in Yanaka – Cats, Carbs & Sunset Streets
#cityplaybook
Tucked away in Tokyo’s Bunkyo ward, Yanaka feels like a gentle step back in time. With old-school charm, sleepy streets, and shops full of personality, it’s the kind of neighborhood that makes you want to slow down and just wander.
I started my walk at Yuyake Dandan—a little staircase known for its sunset views and mellow vibe. Locals, students, and cats all seem to pass through here at their own pace.
Around the corner, I found a shop selling all things cat-themed. From tote bags to teacups, it’s basically heaven for cat lovers (and even if you’re not, you’ll probably still walk out with something cute).
For lunch, I stopped by Onigiri Café Risaku. Their handmade rice balls are simple, warm, and made with care—exactly the kind of comfort food you want in a quiet neighborhood like this.
In the afternoon, I grabbed a cat tail–shaped baked donut from Yanaka Shippoya (yes, it’s as adorable as it sounds), then swung by Ohirasei-pan to pick up a fluffy kaiser roll–style sandwich to save for later.
It wasn’t a packed day—and that’s exactly what made it so perfect.
Why I recommend Yanaka:
・It’s full of small discoveries and quiet charm, ideal for a slow city stroll
・You’ll feel like a local, even if it’s your first time
