The Xishiku Church (North Church) was once located at Canchikou by the Zhongnanhai Lake (diagonally opposite the old Beijing Library) and opened in 1703. In 1887, it was demolished due to the expansion of Zhongnanhai. Later, the Qing government allocated money and rebuilt it in Xishiku, Xi'an Gate. In 1900, it was renovated and increased by one storey, becoming the solemn and beautiful Beitang we see today. It is a church combining Chinese and Western, with four high minarets, three pointed arch entrances and a circular rose window in the middle of the main span, creating a dignified and beautiful façade, which becomes more and more white and tall when surrounded by green pines and cypresses. . The plan of the lobby is in the shape of a cross, with a height of about 16.5 meters, and the spire of the bell tower is about 31 meters high. In front of the hall, on the left and right sides of the hall, there is a pavilion with a Chinese-style four-cornered yellow glazed tile roof. Inside the pavilion is a stone tablet written by Qianlong himself. They are one west, one middle, one high and one short, and they are cleverly matched, making people applaud. The golden vault supported by 300 giant columns and 80 stained glass windows in the church always remind people of Notre Dame de Paris. In 1985, the North Church was renovated. The main altar of Jesus in front of the lobby and the altars of the Virgin Mary and Holy Father Joseph on the east and west sides were rebuilt. The statues of saints on both sides of the main entrance are rare among churches in Beijing.
