A Day in Quanzhou: Don't Miss This Forgotten Treasure Traditional Village
Previously, during a half-day layover in Quanzhou, I discovered a serene corner hidden away from the modern hustle and bustle, about 20 minutes' drive (10 kilometers) from the airport—Wulin Traditional Village. Unlike the bustling West Street adorned with flowers, it quietly stands there, with its distinctive red brick and white stone buildings that blend Minnan and Nanyang styles, telling the story of overseas Chinese's love for their homeland.
·
🌲Before entering the village, you can see towering phoenix trees from afar, with their fiery red flowers in full bloom, seemingly welcoming visitors from afar and calling out to wanderers.
🏠Upon entering the village, you will see rows of red brick and white stone buildings, with various deities and mythical creatures on the swallowtail ridges, each with its own unique features.
🏰As you go further in, you will see Western-style buildings such as the Chaodong Building, the Spanish-style Qiaopi Museum built with red bricks, and the Roman-style Western-style building "Gun Tower". They all bear witness to the overseas Chinese who ventured out to explore the new world but never forgot their homeland and gave back to their hometown.
🌟Recommended spots to check out:
✅Chaodong Building
✅Qiaopi Museum
✅Gun Tower
✅Five-story House
✅Juruo Ancient House Bookstore.
Ladies can also change into Peranakan costumes here to experience the Nanyang style. What impressed me the most was a coffee shop here where the latte art was actually the God of Wealth, truly reflecting the Fujian people's love and longing for wealth
.

Before leaving Quanzhou, be sure to leave a day for this 600-year-old village
Don't just know to go to West Street and Zanhua when you go to Quanzhou~😆 If you want to avoid the crowd and feel the Minnan ancient house style, 🛖 you must go to this Nanyang ancient village in Quanzhou that has a history of 600 years‼️
📍Jinjiang Wulin Traditional Village
🎫No tickets required
🚗I took a taxi from the airport after getting off the plane, it only takes 15 minutes, and it takes about 50 minutes from Quanzhou city
The buildings here are very distinctive, 📷 there are many photo spots, and you can also experience the Nyonya costume, which can better integrate into the scene.
📷Share my machine position, but there are more beautiful places that you can discover while walking around✅
👉Chaodong Building, Five-story House, Pit Wall Building, Stage, Bridge Batch Hall, Gun Building, etc.
I personally suggest that you can rush here the day you get off the ✈️ plane or the day you are going to fly away, leaving 2-3h is enough, because it is very close to the airport and will not detour.

Quanzhou! Compared to West Street! I prefer this century-old village!
Compared to the crowded West Street,
I prefer this century-old village in Quanzhou.
With a history of over 600 years,
It combines Chinese, Western and Minnan architectural styles,
It's really photogenic here!
.
📍Quanzhou Jinjiang Wulin Traditional Village
🚗About 20 minutes from the airport, about 40 minutes drive from West Street
.
The Wulin traditional village was built by overseas Chinese who returned home years ago, so it has both Western style and Minnan characteristics.
.
Travel Tips:
✔️The Chaodong Tower at the entrance is the most photogenic one, with a strong Western Roman style, both the front and the inside are very photogenic.
.
✔️The wall and tree at the entrance of the visitor center, when the sun is out, the light and shadow are super beautiful!
.
✔️The old houses and alleys, red walls and tiles, any corner is very photogenic!
.
It is recommended to reserve half a day for a visit here, you can change into a Nyonya costume~ I just happened to have a hairpin flower that day, so I didn't change.
.
Thank you for reading, see you next time👋🏻

Quanzhou Jinjiang Wulin | Experience Nanyang style in a Minnan ancient village.
📆 I went to Quanzhou again this weekend!
I really love Quanzhou, a city perfect for 🚶🏻♂️ city walks!
Minnan-style architecture ⛩️, Nanyang style, and a leisurely pace of life
are all reasons why I ❤️ love Quanzhou!
But this time I didn't go to the old town, I went to Jinjiang [Wulin Ancient Village].
·
🏠 Wulin Traditional Village is located in Jinjiang, Quanzhou, in the center of the Minnan Golden Triangle, separated from Taiwan by a body of water, and surrounded by the sea on three sides. The village was formed during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, covering an area of about 1,000 mu, with a building area of 60,000 square meters, and more than 10,000 overseas Chinese living abroad. It is known as the "Museum of Overseas Chinese Architecture."
·
🏡 Wulin Village has preserved a complete group of century-old buildings, mostly built from the early last century to around the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, including the mottled Chaodong Building, the Delong House covered by ancient banyan trees, the Deyang House known as the "Ninety-Nine Doors," the Xionghuai Motherland Building with peacocks flying in pairs, and the Dream Vegetable Family Voice Building, a single duplex apartment... These buildings, which carry the nostalgia of generations of Wulin people and overseas Chinese, are scattered in the 660-mu traditional ancient village. They include more than 200 Minnan official-style houses, Chinese and Western-style residences, Gothic architecture, and ancient Roman architecture 🏰.
·
✨ As a typical and complete Minnan traditional village, Wulin has 89 buildings of various styles, including the Ming Dynasty Baifu Wall, Qing Dynasty official-style red brick houses, modern Gothic and Roman-style Western-style buildings, and Fanzi buildings, which silently tell the glorious glory of the century-old overseas Chinese village and convey the deep feelings of generations of overseas Chinese.
·
🚏 It is 5 minutes from Quanzhou South Station of the Fuzhou-Xiamen High-Speed Railway, 15 minutes from Quanzhou International Airport, 15 minutes from Jinjiang City Center, 5 minutes from Shishi City, 30 minutes from Quanzhou, and 40 minutes from Xiamen.

🍁Listen to advice!
Traveling to Quanzhou! Don't just go to West Street in the ancient city!

Not only can you avoid crowds and travel freely
🍁You can also see a century-old Nanyang-style building complex... Girls can also change into Nyonya costumes and take beautiful photos! It is close to the airport and Quanzhou South, and transportation is also very convenient
🍁Wulin Village was built by early overseas Chinese returning to their hometown, and it is a microcosm of their longing for their hometown... Here you can not only see Minnan-style buildings but also feel the exotic architectural style. In addition to buildings, you can also see ancient wells and old trees with exposed roots... It is really worth spending half a day here to walk around!
🍁No tickets or reservations required, free to visit
🍁Wulin Village is a representative overseas Chinese hometown in Minnan. Overseas Chinese go out to work and return home to build their hometown, bringing Western and Nanyang styles back to their hometown, integrating them into Minnan traditional culture... Full of overseas Chinese's strong nostalgia
Several of my favorite photo and play points:
🍁Chaodong Building:
Landmark building at the entrance, the largest mansion in the village, take a photo at the entrance, remember to walk inside and take a photo in the middle of the courtyard
🍁Overseas Chinese Letter Museum:
Spanish-style building built with Minnan red bricks, free to go to the second floor, you can take a panoramic view of the ancient village, take a photo standing on the balcony, or take a high-angle photo of the ground
🍁Gun Tower:
Tower-shaped, not necessarily standing below to take a photo, take a long-distance photo of the ancient village from the road in front of the Overseas Chinese Letter Museum, which has a stronger sense of hierarchy
🍁Five-story house:
Named after the five-story building, stand at the intersection a little further away, you can take a full photo
🍁Dewei House:
Minnan ancient dwelling, there is a big banyan tree with exposed roots inside, which is very beautiful. Locals usually call it "Banyan Root House", just ask if you can't find it
🍁Grassland on the left hand side of the visitor center:
It's nice to take photos of people sitting on the wooden boards under the tree, there is a Heyue Culture Museum behind, you can go to the second floor to take photos

Wulin Traditional Village, located in Jinjiang, Quanzhou, is surrounded by the sea on three sides and faces Kinmen Island to the south. It was formed during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of over 600 years. It flourished in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, with 'nine out of ten households having overseas Chinese.' Many people from Wulin went to Southeast Asia, endured hardships, and returned home with money to build houses, forming the famous Minnan Overseas Chinese Village. The village now has Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings; modern Gothic, Roman-style Western buildings, and various other ancient buildings, totaling over a hundred, making it a 'Museum of Modern Overseas Chinese Architecture' and the 'Back Garden of Minnan Culture.' The village is surrounded by green trees, with ancient houses and Western buildings reflecting on the lake surface. The beautiful natural scenery and tranquil village atmosphere attract countless travelers to explore Minnan. The saying 'Plant a phoenix tree, and the phoenix will come' and 'Every building has a story' are worth savoring in the unique historical atmosphere of Southeast Asian style, where one can appreciate the patriotic sentiments.

When you come to Quanzhou, don't miss this century-old South Seas style ancient village
When you travel to Quanzhou, if you find West Street too crowded and noisy, I recommend you visit Wulin Village in Jinjiang.
This group of Southern Fujian ancient buildings, which has endured over 600 years of vicissitudes, is filled with the nostalgia of overseas Chinese from Southern Fujian. Here you can find both Southern Fujian official-style mansions and exotic architectures such as Gothic and ancient Roman styles. Walking on the stone-paved roads, you will experience the nostalgia of a traditional Chinese village blended with Western architecture. I strongly suggest spending half a day to explore this niche treasure and feel the pulse of history and the charm of the overseas Chinese hometown in Southern Fujian.

It takes about 20min by taxi from Quanzhou Airport, and about 10min from the South Station.
It takes about 40min by taxi from Quanzhou Ancient City, and the car can be parked at the entrance of the scenic area, which is a 5min walk to the village.
🕐Tour Duration: 2-3 hours
Old Wu recommends a Sino-Western travel route for everyone⬇️
Chao Dong Tower➡️Opera Stage➡️Five-Story Building➡️Gun Tower➡️Overseas Chinese Letter Museum➡️World View Tower➡️De Wei Residence➡️Southern Fujian Style Museum➡️Juruo Ancient House Bookstore.
📍Chao Dong Tower: This is the landmark building of Wulin Village, with Roman-style arches. The courtyard is simply lovely for photos! There is also an exhibition hall for visiting.
📍De Wei Residence: A very traditional Southern Fujian ancient building stack, with a more than 200-year-old banyan tree in the courtyard, with intricate roots, very spectacular, also known as 'Banyan Root Residence' by the locals.
📍Gun Tower: Also known as the Cultivation Tower, it is the highest point of the ancient village. Buying a ticket to go up allows you to overlook the entire beauty of the ancient village.
📍Scoop Wine Brewery: At the entrance of the soy sauce wine museum, there are bamboo rattan chairs, and you can also take photos of the Gun Tower.
📍Opera Stage: Not far from the entrance of the village, you can see the opera stage. The sunshine wine on the stage is really amazing, and various activities are also held here. You can check the performance list at 'Jinjiang Wulin Traditional Village'.
📍Five-Story Building: The tallest western-style building in Wulin, with five stories. The exterior is in the style of ancient Rome, but the first and second floors are in Southern Fujian style, which is quite interesting.
📍Overseas Chinese Letter Museum: A Spanish-style western building made of Southern Fujian red bricks. Now it is a post office building, and you can go up to the second floor for free to take panoramic photos of the village, with a great view.
🚶🏻♂️Juruo Ancient House Bookstore: The environment is particularly nice, especially for taking photos, unique.
Tips
1️⃣The ferry car costs 9 yuan for a round trip, which is not very necessary unless it's a very hot day, as it's only a 3~5 minute walk.
2️⃣For those who want to take photos in Nyonya/Zan flower style, this is the place to come, with fewer people than Quanzhou West Street and Xunpu Village, and the scenery and buildings are also very photogenic.
3️⃣There are plenty of things to eat, drink, and play in the scenic area, including some cultural and creative shops, beverage shops, authentic Southern Fujian restaurants, etc. If you don't want to eat in the scenic area, Wen Cheng Niu Niu or Bagua Street nearby is recommended.
4️⃣The pond at the entrance of the village is also a great place to take reflection and sunset photos.

Heading to Wulin for a rendezvous in the South Seas
How can one miss the Nyonya costume change in Wulin when visiting Quanzhou?
The joy that cost 80 yuan today was given by Wulin~
Once you arrive at the Wulin scenic area, you'll see Nyonya costume changes everywhere. My personal suggestion is that unless you have already made an appointment with a very popular internet-famous store and photographer, your choice should be like shopping for clothes: you can go into the store to browse, find the style and color of the clothes you like in advance, and then let the merchant match them for you. Try to find a larger store with clean costumes and a complete range of accessories, where you can pick first and pay later. Don't be shy; make sure to choose something you're satisfied with. The 80 yuan includes a set of clothes, a vest, hairstyle, and shoes, all at a uniform price. If you want more choices, be sure to go early, otherwise the clothes might be rented out by others. Makeup requires an additional fee. Unless you really don't know how to take photos, or you are traveling alone, finding a photographer on the spot is likely to be a disappointment. The final photos may not have the same feel as the customer photos you see on the platform, and the customer photos they show you may not even be taken by their own photographers, or they may not be able to arrange for that photographer for you at the moment. Most of them are the kind of package deals that come with the store's assembly line. Although the price won't be very expensive, starting from 200 or 300 yuan, I personally don't like the experience of that assembly line. In short, the Nyonya costume change is still worth experiencing, and as for the rest, it depends on personal needs.
The most photogenic spots are basically around the 'Chaodong Building', the closest building to the intersection. Wulin is currently not only free of admission but also free parking, although the parking lot is about a 10-minute walk from the scenic area.

Quanzhou Wulin—A Century-old Architectural Complex of Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia
Wulin ancient village is an ancient village with Southeast Asian and Western-style buildings constructed by early Minnan overseas Chinese after returning to the village. The scenic area is quite large, with hundreds of various buildings. Here, one can not only see Minnan-style architecture but also experience the charm of foreign architectural styles. In addition to the buildings, one can also see ancient wells and old trees with twisted roots... Since it is a bit far from the ancient city of Quanzhou, there are relatively fewer tourists, and the transportation is very convenient, especially for those who drive!

Quanzhou Travel: The Nanyang Architecture and Overseas Chinese Imprints Emerge from Traditional Village Scenes as if Stepping out of an Oil Painting
🌴 Finally, before departing, I returned to Jinjiang to experience the final stop of my journey, the much-anticipated Wulin Traditional Village. It's a must-visit cinematic spot that speaks for itself. Avoid the crowds for beautiful, easy photography, and hurry to explore the unique charm of the overseas Chinese Nanyang Nyonya style.

Name: Jinjiang Wulin Traditional Village
Address: Dongxi San Road, Jinjiang City, Quanzhou, Fujian Province
Admission: Free
Opening: All day

🌴 Ancient wells, old trees, traditional architecture, Minnan ancient houses, and Western fusion offer a unique experience of the Nanyang style left by overseas Chinese. Stroll leisurely, with a view at every step, immersing yourself in the atmosphere.
🌟 Nanyang Style
Experience the traditional and interesting Nyonya culture, as if entering a unique village with a blend of ancient and modern vibes, filled with the atmosphere of traditional culture. Dress up for great photo shoots, stroll and observe the local customs, and enjoy the unique flavor. Old Minnan houses and tropical times give off the essence of pretending to be in the Singapore-Malaysia region.
🌟 Overseas Chinese Sentiment
After entering, soak in the deep affection and determination of the overseas Chinese for their hometown, with various items on display in the museum. The architecture is distinctive due to the gathering of many overseas Chinese who have lived abroad, leaving behind traces of the countries they once lived in, such as Southeast Asia, Europe, America, and more.
🌟 Photo Spot
You can capture the atmosphere of an uninhabited village, as the whole village is quite large and still expanding. Any building is extremely aesthetic, with many beautiful ladies taking portraits here. Unlike Cuiyu Village, where people crowd together and queue up, here you can truly enjoy a view at every step, ensuring a high success rate for great photos.
🌴 I love this place for its unique culture and atmosphere; I love this place for the truly amazing photos; I love this place for its niche, quiet, and leisurely vibe. Take the opportunity to visit if you can.

Wulin Traditional Village
Wulin Traditional Village is located in Jinjiang City. There are public buses K901 and K902 from Quanzhou city center that can get you there, but it's about a 2-kilometer walk to the village itself. Wulin Traditional Village was formed during the Ming Dynasty. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, villagers who had lived overseas began to return to the country and started to fund the construction of exquisite Minnan official-style mansions, Sino-Western fusion residences, Gothic and ancient Roman-style western buildings, as well as Fanzi buildings. Today, the village has well preserved these century-old buildings with stories. Wulin Traditional Village is known as the Overseas Chinese Architecture Museum. Visiting Wulin Traditional Village is free of charge.

I thought Quanzhou West Street was already beautiful, until I came to Wulin Village
If you find Quanzhou West Street too crowded and noisy, why not escape to Wulin Village in Jinjiang for a breath of fresh air? Here, there is a series of well-preserved old-style buildings, filled with a strong Nanyang flavor🌸, as well as Minnan official-style mansions, Gothic style, and ancient Roman architectural styles among the diverse houses. Each ancient building tells the stories of generations of Wulin people, and the endless yearning for their hometown from overseas Chinese in foreign lands.

Quanzhou Wulin | Half the city is filled with the bustle of life, and the other half is like a fairyland, complete with a fairy-like gas station!
Quanzhou Wulin's ancient village has too many coffee shops, combining various artistic and fresh elements with the local traditional 'cuo' architecture, making it greatly loved.
The fairy-like gas station catches your eye as soon as you get off the car, right at the entrance of the village.
It has an outer courtyard and a skywell, with green plants and fresh flowers shining brightly in the ancient dwelling.
Sitting here, having a cup of tea or coffee, truly feels like blissful happiness akin to that of the immortals!

Wulin traditional village
Wulin traditional village is located in Jinjiang, Quanzhou, at the heart of the Minnan Golden Triangle, separated from Taiwan by a stretch of water, and surrounded by the sea on three sides. To the northeast, it connects to Quanzhou Bay, borders Shishi City to the east, faces the Taiwan Strait to the southeast, looks across to Kinmen Island to the south, borders Nan'an City to the west, and is adjacent to Licheng District to the north. The village was established during the Hongwu years of the Ming Dynasty, covering an area of about 1000 mu, with a construction area of 60,000 square meters. It is home to more than 10,000 overseas Chinese, earning it the reputation of the 'Overseas Chinese Architecture Museum'. In 2016, it was listed in the National Traditional Villages by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development; in July 2023, it became a national 4A-level tourist attraction.

A leisurely day tour in Jinjiang
Following the principle of a leisurely tour, the number of scenic spots for the chartered tour in Jinjiang was reduced from 6/7 to 3. Departing from Quanzhou at 8:45, we headed to 'Wudian City' early to see the ancient houses. Just after 9 o'clock, before the tour groups arrived, we strolled around leisurely. The old houses all had a lot of character. The village has produced many talents, if not top scholars, then advanced scholars. There are also many photos of overseas Chinese returning to their ancestral homes to pay homage.
Half an hour later, we finished touring Wudian City and went to 'Wulin Traditional Village' (a traditional Nanyang village that was almost demolished for factory construction). We hired a tour guide sister for the explanation (200 yuan/group). The village was built with money sent back by villagers who went to earn money in Nanyang (mainly the Philippines). It is mainly inhabited by the Cai family. The houses are grand, and one even had an elevator shaft left from that time. Later, because the money for the renovation was donated to the war effort, the house was never completed. The banyan tree in the picture grew from a seed brought to the roof by a small bird, eventually causing the house to collapse, and is known as the world's strongest life form! 👍
For lunch, we chose 'Green Island Seafood Restaurant' in Shishi, famous for its radish rice and matsutake buns.
After lunch, in the afternoon, we went to the temple on the sea - Luoji Temple to have a look. Since we wanted to take a distant view of the temple, the driver dropped us off near the nearby Guanyin statue. There were many people checking in, but fortunately, the place was big enough. After taking photos, we could walk along the beach to the temple. Luoji Temple was built in 2000, and at that time, no one thought it would become a popular spot for internet celebrities. There were many people in the temple, more checking in than praying.
After visiting Luoji Temple, the driver also took us to the nearby Hongta Bay to stroll on the beach. Since we all came from the south, we were not very interested in the beach and just took a casual walk before returning to the car.
The driver finally took us back to Quanzhou and dropped us off at 'Luoyang Bridge', ending the chartered trip. We followed the crowd and strolled on the stone bridge. The stone bridge was wider and sturdier than imagined. Those large stone slabs were said to have been positioned using the rising and falling tides, with wooden boats supporting them at high tide to find the right position, and as the tide fell, the stone slabs would fit perfectly on the stone pillars. The ancients were truly wise! After touring the bridge, we could directly call a car to go to the selected restaurant for dinner.
Today, I walked more than 15,000 steps. A bit more relaxed than yesterday.
