Yacha Mengkong Temple, also known as Yachai Mengkhao Temple, was built by the founder of the Ayutthaya Dynasty. The temple was built in the 14th century to commemorate the killing of the Burmese prince in the war with Burma, so the name of the temple means a great victory. Like other ancient buildings, the outline of the temple can only be judged by the remaining foundation stones on the ground. The temple is famous for having a 28-meter-long reclining Buddha. This huge reclining Buddha lies comfortably in the sun, lying peacefully on his side surrounded by ruins, making people feel the peace and detachment of the Buddha at first sight. There are many Buddha statues around the beautiful pagoda. When you climb up the pagoda, there is a small Buddhist hall inside. There are four gilded Buddha statues in the four corners. When you look up, you can see many bats making their homes there.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon: A Peaceful Morning at Ayutthaya's Iconic Temple
#thailandtrip#ayutthaya
Visiting Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon early in the morning is an unforgettable experience. The peaceful atmosphere, before the crowds arrive, lets you fully appreciate the temple's beauty and history. The towering chedi, surrounded by rows of serene Buddha statues draped in saffron robes, is particularly stunning in the soft morning light. Climbing up the ancient chedi is a must—not only for the sense of accomplishment but for the incredible views of the temple grounds and surrounding greenery from the top. The tranquility and charm of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon at dawn make it one of Ayutthaya’s most magical spots to explore.

The history of
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a famous Buddhist temple located in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It is also known as Wat Chao Phraya Thai, and its full name is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon Worawihan. The temple is known for its magnificent pagoda, which is one of the largest in Ayutthaya and is visible from far away.
The history of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon dates back to the 14th century, during the reign of King U-Thong. At that time, the area where the temple is located was a jungle. The king wanted to establish a new city, and he ordered the construction of the temple to mark the city's northern entrance. The temple was built to house a Buddha image, which the king had ordered to be cast.
Over the years, the temple underwent several renovations and expansions, with each subsequent king of Ayutthaya adding to its splendor. In the 16th century, King Naresuan the Great added a large chedi (pagoda) to the temple, which is the most notable feature of the temple today. The chedi is about 62 meters tall and has a diameter of about 36 meters at its base. It is surrounded by smaller chedis, each containing a Buddha image.
The temple was also used as a site for royal ceremonies, and several kings of Ayutthaya were cremated at the temple. During the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya in the 18th century, the temple was badly damaged. It fell into disrepair until the 1950s when it was restored by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand.
Today, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and its peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can climb up the chedi to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The temple also houses several important Buddha images, including a reclining Buddha and a standing Buddha.
In addition to its religious and historical significance, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is also known for its connection to the Thai martial art of Muay Thai. Legend has it that King Naresuan the Great used the temple grounds to train his soldiers in the art of Muay Thai. Today, there is a statue of King Naresuan the Great at the temple, depicting him in a pose that is typical of Muay Thai fighters.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, worship the tallest pagoda in Ayutthaya
Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, pay homage to the Chedi Chai Mongkol, the tallest chedi in Ayutthaya
Wat Yai Chai Mongkol was built in the early Ayutthaya period during the reign of King Ramathibodi I or King U Thong. The interesting points of Wat Yai Chai Mongkol are the historical stories from the Ayutthaya period, as well as the beautiful architecture that still stands to this day.
Behind the prominent Ubosot of Wat Yai is the Chedi Chai Mongkol. It is believed that it was built during the reign of King Naresuan the Great when he won the elephant battle to celebrate his victory over the Maha Uparat of Burma and was given the name “Chedi Chai Mongkol” in 2135 B.E. However, most people called it “Phra Chedi Yai”, which is the origin of the name “Wat Yai Chai Mongkol”. Inside the temple, there is a shrine to King Naresuan the Great for you to pay homage to.

Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
Located 5 kilometers outside Ayutthaya, the oldest historical temple in the ancient city is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon. It was built in the 14th century and served as a filming location for the movie 'Lost in Thailand' and the 1986 version of 'Journey to the West' as the Bukin Temple in the Kingdom of Tianzhu. In 'Journey to the West,' the Bukin Temple was paved with gold bricks, and today, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is indeed Ayutthaya's most precious historical heritage.
The temple was built by King U Thong, the first king of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, in 1357. The architecture incorporates Sri Lankan styles, and the main stupa, which stands 62 meters tall, was constructed by the 20th king of Ayutthaya. The main stupa has been well-preserved to this day. It was built to commemorate the victory in the war between the Ayutthaya Kingdom and Burma, hence the temple's other name, the Temple of Great Victory. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is located away from the main city area, allowing it to remain well-preserved.
The main stupa is magnificent and grand, with a brick-red primitive architectural style that is both mysterious and majestic. Two giant Buddha statues flank the main stupa. The temple is surrounded by a circle of seated Buddhas. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a well-preserved and large-scale victory temple in Ayutthaya. From the remaining stupas and temple ruins, we can gain a more intuitive understanding of the architectural characteristics of the Ayutthaya period, where Khmer architectural heritage blends with Sri Lankan styles in the Buddha statue carving techniques of the Ayutthaya period.
The main stupa of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is also the tallest stupa in Ayutthaya. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of the entire temple and cityscape. The top of the stupa houses four gilded Buddha statues. Climbing the stupa also provides a bird's-eye view of the ancient city of Ayutthaya.
Main attractions: 62-meter stupa, filming location of seated Buddha in 'Journey to the West,' largest reclining Buddha in Ayutthaya
Entrance fee: 20 THB

Ancient Wind of Power: Wat Chai Mongkol
#ancientbuildings
Wat Yai Chai Mongkon is a historical Buddhist temple located in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It has been an important center of Thai Buddhism since its construction in the late 17th century and continues to be a popular tourist destination today.
This temple was built in 1357 for the community of monks from the Pa Kaeo Sect and was originally called Wat Phra Chao Phya Tha. The temple was designed for meditation, which King U-Thong was engaged in along with the monks. In 1592, in honor of the victory over the Burmese, another king, Naresuan, built a majestic pagoda, after which the temple changed its name and became known as Wat Yai Chai Mongkon. There is a statue of a Reclining Buddha in orange robes. In addition to the Reclining Buddha, you can admire the statues of meditating Buddhas, also dressed in orange robes. It has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1991.
The temple complex includes several buildings, including a large chedi (stupa), which towers over the site and contains numerous statues of Buddha, as well as other religious figures from various sects of Buddhism.
The most impressive feature of Wat Yai Chai Mongkon Temple is the collection of statues depicting various aspects of the Buddha's life and teachings. These include images from his birth to his death, as well as images showing him meditating or teaching monks various principles such as compassion or wisdom. Some sculptures even depict stories from Jataka fairy tales, which are traditional Buddhist stories designed to teach moral lessons through allegory and symbolism.
Visitors can also explore the many small shrines on site dedicated to various Buddhas such as Amitabha, Maitreya or Kuan Yin among others. They often contain detailed carvings depicting scenes related to the legend of each deity, along with corresponding images of statues displayed inside each temple building. Whether you are looking for spiritual enlightenment or just want to take some beautiful photos while exploring this ancient place – Wat Yai Chia Mongkon definitely won't disappoint you.

Review of Wat Yai Chai Mongkol
A very historically significant temple located in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, the original name of which was "Wat Pa Kaew" or "Wat Chao Thai", is located in the southeast of Ko Phra Nakhon. This temple is outstanding for its exquisite architecture and a large pagoda that is believed to have been renovated during the reign of King Naresuan the Great. Inside the temple, there is also the Phra Phuttha Chai Mongkhon, which is a sacred object of the temple, and the shrine of King Naresuan the Great, which was completed in 2544.
Tourists like to make merit, worship Buddha, and take pictures of the ancient sites in the temple, which have very beautiful architecture, including the large pagoda in the ancient Ayutthaya style that still stands proudly to this day, and the ordination hall enshrining the Phra Phuttha Chai Mongkhon, the principal Buddha image of the temple.
