Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, formerly known as "Wat Pa Kaew" or "Wat Chao Thai", is a prominent feature of the temple, including the large pagoda, which is believed to have been renovated during the reign of King Naresuan the Great. Inside, the ordination hall houses the "Phra Phuttha Chai Mongkol", the principal Buddha image, which is a sacred object of the temple. In addition, the temple also houses the shrine of King Naresuan the Great.
History This temple was built in the early Ayutthaya period during the reign of King Ramathibodi I, or King U Thong, the founder of Ayutthaya. According to legend, in 1900 B.E., King U Thong graciously ordered the bodies of Chao Kaew and Chao Thai, who died of cholera, to be exhumed and cremated. The place where the bodies were cremated was given the name Wat Pa Kaew. Later, the monks of Wat Pa Kaew who had been ordained as monks From the Ratana Mahathera monastery in Sri Lanka, this group of monks was highly respected by the people of Ayutthaya, causing more people to ordain in the Pa Kaew sect. King U Thong therefore appointed the abbot of this sect as Somdej Phra Wanarat, who held the position of the right-hand patriarch, alongside Somdej Phra Buddhakosachan, who held the position of the patriarch of the Khanthathura sect. Later, it became the residence of the Pa Kaew sect monks, with Somdej Phra Wanarat as the head monk, so it was called Wat Chao Phraya Thai Pa Kaew sect.
During the reign of King Naresuan, to celebrate his victory over Mangayosawa, the Maha Uparat of Burma, it is believed that this is the origin of the name “Wat Yai Chai Mongkol”. King Naresuan ordered the construction of a large pagoda to be a symbol of his victory and kindness towards those soldiers, and bestowed the name Chedi Chai Mongkol in the year 2135 B.E. It is 1 sen 1 wa high and is the tallest pagoda in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province to this day.
