Songkran Phra Pradaeng
The atmosphere of playing saba 20-04-2567
Bon Wat Songtham
Today, I would like to briefly reminisce about the past of saba. The purpose of playing saba is to let young men from other villages (other villagers) get to know girls, while the adults watch from a distance.
In the past, young Mon men and women from Pak Lat would go to work in the rice fields at Bang Phli. When the rice farming season ended, they would return home to Phra Pradaeng. The adults wanted to give the girls in the village time to meet young men from other villages, so they organized a saba game under their houses. The girls would prepare the place, break the soil, level the area, make a courtyard, and decorate the saba with flowers, string jasmine, and prepare cool drinking water. The saba game would start at around 7:00 p.m. and end at around midnight.
In one saba, there would be about 10-14 girls joining the game, depending on the location and the single girls. The clothes the girls wore would vary depending on their status. Overall, the colors were as colorful as candy, with shawls adorned with flowers.
