Chiang Saen Ancient Town
Chiang Saen in Chiang Rai was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The town still has well-preserved ancient temples, unique architectural styles, and Buddha statues, all of which testify to its historical significance as a major city of the kingdom. Among the must-visit attractions are Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Paksek, the latter being known for its millennium-old teak forest temple with numerous carvings, including Buddha statues from the Lamphun Queen era, the 'Time God' that devours time, and standing Buddhas surrounding the stupa. Wat Chedi Luang was built in the third year after the establishment of Chiang Saen, authorized by King Sean-Pu, and both the temple and stupa are early Lanna Buddhist architectural styles.
