Wat Phra That Doi Saket has a royal chedi with a legend that during the time of the Buddha, the Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment. He traveled to spread the Dharma in the Indian subcontinent and performed a miracle by appearing in his divine form on the top of this mountain. Then, he emitted six-colored rays of light that shone brightly throughout the area. When a pair of nagas living in Nong Bua saw the six-colored rays, they crawled up to the top of the mountain and saw the Lord Buddha. They were so impressed that they transformed into a young man and a young woman to pay homage and offered him lotus flowers. The Lord Buddha accepted the lotus flower and preached the Dharma to the transformed nagas and gave them his hair relics. The nagas then prayed to build a stone chedi and placed the hair relics on this mountain. Later, a prana saw a beautiful pagoda and brought stones to build it into a pagoda. At night, he had a dream that the pagoda contained the hair of the Lord Buddha. He told the people in that area to come and pay homage. The mountain was called Doi Sen Ket, which later changed to Doi Saket.
