Visiting temples is such an amazing experience of a lifetime as we love to understand the beginnings of buddhism and the temples’ history as well.
One of the temples that you shouldn’t miss in Cambodia is Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh.
Wat Phnom or “Mountain Pagoda” has on point architectural design which amazed us when we were there. Highly recommended for those who loves to visit temples.

Wat Phnom — A beautiful Buddhist Temple
Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple, a pagoda, that symbolizes the name of Phnom Penh, a historical site in the record of Khmer national identity. Wat Phnom has a total height of 46 meters. The pagoda is named after Lady Penh from the story of the discovery of the five statues: one Vishnu statue and four Buddha statues. Erected in 1373, the temple was used to house four Buddha statues, which were allegedly discovered by an old wealthy lady named Penh who then constructed a small shrine on the site to protect the statues. Its a small beautiful temple. You can see religious ceremonies all day around. Many people visit to pray and perform ceremonies. #buddhist #religiousculture #phnompenh #cambodia

Wat Phnom Buddhist Temple
Wat Phnom is a Buddhist temple, a pagoda, that symbolizes the name of Phnom Penh, a historical site in the record of Khmer national identity. Wat Phnom Doun Penh has a total height of 46 meters. The pagoda is named after grandmother "Doun Penh" from the story of the discovery of the four statues: one Vishnu statue and four buddhas statue. In 1372, a wealthy old lady named "Doun Penh" lived on a small hill near the bank of the confluence of the four rivers. One day, when it was raining, Doun Penh went down to the port to take a bath and saw a floating Koki tree in the river and she called the village to fish it from the water. She and the villagers took a piece of wood to scrape off the mud and in the hole of the Koki tree, there were four Buddha statues made of bronze, brass and one made of marble. Another statue was in the form of Vishnu with the hands holding a staff, a chain, a snail, and a lotus flower. Doun Penh asked the villagers to help retrieve the Koki tree and retrieve the four treasures. Later, Doun Penh assigned the villagers to build an artificial hill and build a small wooden temple on top of the hill to house the statue. She invited monks to pray for the statues and the monks named the hermitage "Wat Phnom" which is known to this day. #scenicspotguide

Stayed locally and crossed the road into the memorial park and Wat Phnom. We paid $1 each to enter the grounds at night.
The lighting against the architecture was stunning. Best viewed in my opinion at night to get the real feel for the temple and grounds.
I would advise going with company. The park and temple are in the middle of the main roundabout. Crossing the road to enter is fairly easy.

Hilltop temple in downtown Phnom Penh
Wat Phnom, which means "mountain temple," is one of Phnom Penh's oldest temples. The ambiance is tranquil and peaceful from atop a 27-meter-high man-made hill. The temple is wonderfully lit after nightfall.
Wat Phnom is made up of multiple shrines, a viharn, and a big chedi. The temple has been rebuilt and refurbished multiple times over the years, the most recent being in 1926. Visitors must ascend the flight of stairs to the top to reach the temple to see the beauty of it up close.

Our first Songkran...
#songkran2024 it was a surprise and bonus at the end of our Cambodia trip. For sure this is a lifetime fun experience for us and we enjoyed the day a lot. Coming from India where we play Holi, we found lots of similarities between the two cultures. The locals welcomed us and everyone around was so happy and playful. We will look for more similar experiences in future... Happy Songkran everyone

Today, I'll take you to check in at Wat Phnom in Cambodia
❤️ It is said that Wat Phnom is the birthplace of Phnom Penh, standing about a hundred meters tall. At the top of the hill, there is an image of Lady Penh, which is one of the symbols of Phnom Penh. From the top of Wat Phnom, you can overlook the entire city of Phnom Penh. Wat Phnom is a famous Instagrammable spot in Phnom Penh.
💜 Wat Phnom Temple is located at the top of Wat Phnom, where a Buddha stupa about 30 meters tall majestically sits atop the hill, adding to its grandeur. At the foot of the hill is a small, tranquil, and elegant park for citizens to rest. At the entrance, you can see the sculpture of a seven-headed serpent, symbolizing 'good weather for the crops'. In fact, this seven-headed serpent is called 'Naga' and is considered a sacred symbol of the origins of the Cambodian nation and a protective deity of the kingdom's prosperity.
🧡 The legend of Wat Phnom: It is said that in the 14th century, a woman named 'Penh' found a Buddha statue that had drifted along the Mekong River due to a flood. She built a small hill, constructed a temple to worship it, and gradually developed it into a bustling town. In the 15th century, the capital of the country was moved from Angkor to this place, officially named 'Phnom Penh', meaning 'the hill of Lady Penh'. The local Chinese community calls it 'Phnom Penh', which may also be one of the origins of the city's name.
💙 Location: Located in the northeastern part of Phnom Penh's city center, at the intersection of 96th Street and Norodom Boulevard.
💖 Admission/Opening Hours
07:00/18:00 The general admission fee is 1 US dollar

Step into Wat Phnom and experience the 600-year cultural history of Phnom Penh
Wat Phnom is a landmark building in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and a sacred place for locals to pray and worship.
Wat Phnom is located at the top of Phnom Hill, with a 30-meter-high stupa dominating the hilltop, and a public leisure square at the foot of the hill. The seven-headed Naga sculpture seen at the entrance symbolizes 'good weather for the crops' and is regarded as a sacred symbol of the origin of the Cambodian nation and the protective deity of the kingdom's prosperity.
Wat Phnom was built in the 14th century and contains a large number of Khmer-style bas-reliefs. The side halls next to it are filled with smoke from incense all year round, where Cambodians and people of all colors offer their gods, kneel devoutly, and burn incense.
The temple is free to visit, and it is said that Phnom Hill is the highest place in Phnom Penh, from where you can overlook the entire city (but I didn't see it when I climbed to the top, maybe it was possible a long, long time ago 😌).

I recently visited Wat Phnom Daun Penh and was blown away by the beauty and tranquility of this historic temple. The temple is situated on a hilltop, providing a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city below.
The architecture of the temple is stunning, with intricate carvings and ornate decorations that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Cambodia. The temple grounds are well-maintained, with lush gardens and beautiful sculptures that add to the serene atmosphere.
What really stood out to me during my visit was the sense of spirituality and reverence that permeates the temple. It's clear that this is a place of deep significance to the local community, and I felt honored to be able to experience it
Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to Wat Phnom Daun Penh for anyone visiting Phnom Penh. It's a must-see attraction that offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Cambodia.

This is a great stop on your visit to Phnom Penh. You learn here that this is where the city gets its name, how the hill was built with the nearby villagers, and the inside is beautiful with many Buddha’s and a wonderful painter ceiling. All of this for 1 USD. We were there during the day so we walked around the park and enjoyed that as well.
