Wat Mahaeyong (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province)
Wat Maheyongkhon or Wat Maheyongkhon means a mountain or a mound. The word Maheyongkhon is the name of an important chedi in Sri Lanka called Maheyongkhon Chedi. It was originally a royal temple of the Vipassanadhura sect. According to the Northern Chronicles, the queen of King Thammaracha, the 8th king of Ayutthaya, built Wat Maheyongkhon. However, according to the Chronicles of Ayutthaya, Luang Prasert version, in the year 800 of the Goat Era or 1981 BE, King Borommarachathirat II built Wat Maheyongkhon. The temple flourished for hundreds of years until it fell into disrepair and underwent a major renovation during the reign of King Thaisa. It flourished until April 7, 1767, when it was destroyed and abandoned again. Then in 1984 BE, Phra Bhavanakhemakun (Luang Pho Surasak Khemarangsi), the abbot of Wat Maheyongkhon A meditation center was established at Wat Mahaeyong to provide Vipassana training to the general public. Currently, the Fine Arts Department has registered Wat Mahaeyong as a national historical site since March 8, 1941.
