[2025 Seoul Attraction] Travel Guide for War Memorial of Korea (Updated Jul)

The War Memorial of Korea (Korean: 전쟁기념관) is a museum located in Yongsan-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It opened in 1994 on the former site of the army headquarters to exhibit and memorialize the military history of Korea. It was built for the purpose of preventing war through lessons from the Korean War and for the hoped for peaceful reunification of North and South Korea. The memorial building has six indoor exhibition rooms and an outdoor exhibition centre displaying war memorabilia and military equipment from China, South Korea and the United States.

My final stop on my Asian holiday was Seoul, South Korea. This was a really cool city to visit, with a lot of variety. The subway system was very straightforward to get around on, which meant that in the few days we were there, we managed to visit Gyeongbukgung Palace, Bukchong Hanok Village (the old town), Culture Street in the Insadong district, a Buddhist temple holding evening prayers, the War Memorial of Korea (which was excellently curated and thoroughly educational), Bukhansan national park, and the old city wall. As I wandered through the expansive museum and outdoor exhibits, I was deeply moved by the tributes to the sacrifices of Korean soldiers and civilians throughout history. The museum's comprehensive displays chronicled the Korean War and other significant conflicts, offering valuable insights into the nation's tumultuous past. After paying my respects at the memorial, I took a contemplative walk through the nearby Namsan Park, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and scenic views of Seoul. Nearby attractions also include the iconic N Seoul Tower and the bustling Namdaemun Market, where I sampled delicious street food and picked up unique souvenirs. Visited the Korean War Memorial in Yongsan District, Seoul, a place designed to remember the painful experiences of the past and remind people never to wage war on this land again. The memorial was established by the War Memorial Association in 1989 and officially opened on June 10, 1994 after five years of preparation. The memorial hall houses more than 10,000 post-war relics. The indoor exhibition is divided into six exhibition halls, including the National Defense Memorial Room, the War History Room, the Korean War Room, the Overseas Deployment Room, and the National Army Development Room. In addition, large objects such as strategic bombers, fighter jets, tanks and missiles are displayed outdoors. The War Memorial of Korea is not only a cultural leisure space, but also a place to learn through history. From children to adults, everyone can learn and participate in various activities here. There are many experience facilities in the memorial hall, which can simply and accurately understand the causes, process and armistice of the Korean War. Even those who are not familiar with history can easily gain a rich travel experience by following the recommended tour routes. Visiting the War Memorial of Korea was a meaningful and fulfilling experience. By showing the cruelty and consequences of war, this place reminds people to cherish peace and strive to avoid repeating the same mistakes. It was a time to express gratitude to the young soldiers who died in the name of the UN forces even though it was a war that took place in another country. You can even board some of the plane and ship.

War Memorial of Korea is located almost in the heart of Seoul city. Just across the road is Korean Ministry of Defense building. However, the complex is a huge multi-storey structure with numerous halls showing the accounts of Korean War which occured from 1950-1953. As you step into the premises and face the main door of the building you see flags of different countries which helped South Korea during the war in any possible way they could. Inside you would come across a huge display of war accounts, both in litererary and artistic form. You would get the feel as if you transition from event to event or action to action as you move from one hall to another. A good place to visit.
