From Sheung Shui to Fanling — Wah Shan Military Path Hike
Be prepared to roll on the rolling ridges that fasten themselves upon the northern backyard of Hong Kong from Sheung Shui to Fanling. You will be hiking the tops of six mounts on this trail with aerial views of both the northern New Territories and the skyline of Shenzhen afar. In this two-hour hike you will have a very pleasant and easy walk up and down paved slopes only. There are literally no stairs to climb.
This path is also known as the Wah Shan Military Path. On this hike you will pass by the San Wai Firing Range (more below) and the San Wai Camp and San Wai Barracks. These are military facilities that continue to operate by the People’s Liberation Army in Hong Kong.
On this hike through Wah Shan, you will come across six mounts in the range of between 100 to 165 meter in altitude. From the Sheung Shui entrance to the trail at Fu Tei Au, you will first go through Cheung Po Tau, then Cham Shan, Wah Shan, High Hill, Ma Tau Leng, and Tsung Shan. The two-hour hike will span across these six mountains, as such the Wah Shan Hike is also known locally as the “Hong Kong version of the Great Wall.”
In terms of views, you will see wide open aerial views of Sheung Shui, Fanling and Shenzhen on this trail.
In terms of difficulty, the segment between Cheung Po Tau and Wah Shan had some difficult slopes up and down. Once you climb over High Hill, the walk is very easy.
On this path you will come across the San Wai / Tai Ling Firing Range. The proper advice is to never go during the days that firing practices take place. However, the firing range is on the ground level – quite a distance from the mountainous path that you will be hiking. An honest assessment is that you will not be harmed if you stay on the hiking trail. That said, you must not go down the way of the firing range when there is firing practice. At Wah Shan, where you can overlook the whole firing range, there are pathways that will lead you there. When red flags are raised, do not go down that pathway. Actually, do not go down that way at all. Stay on course for the hiking.

Recommended hiking routes in the northern New Territories: Shuihuashan
#Valentine's Day 2025
The North New Territories is the real treasure trove of picnic destinations! The first recommendation is Huashan near Sheung Shui. There is a concrete road leading directly to the top of the mountain. The whole journey is easy to navigate and can be completed in 2 hours. It is also affectionately called the "Hong Kong version of the Great Wall" by everyone. Along the way, you can not only enjoy the prosperous skyline of Shenzhen's Luohu District, but also large areas of limited-edition Miscanthus swaying in the wind in winter, with a very high rate of photo-taking, and some angles are even more stunning than Dadong Mountain! 🌄
🚌Transportation strategy:
Starting point: Take KMB No. 73K outside Shangshui Station on the East Rail Line and get off at "Hu Tei Au", which is very convenient.
End point: Walk to Hong Kong Baptist Park Station and take bus 79K to Sheung Shui Station.

Hong Kong Off-the-Beaten-Path Hiking Route: Sheung Shui in the New Territories
During the silver grass blooming season, although Tai Tung Shan is beautiful, it is often overcrowded. I've never experienced having to queue to descend the mountain before; it was incredibly crowded. I prefer less crowded, off-the-beaten-path routes where I can quietly enjoy the pleasure of hiking.
Sheung Shui Wa Shan is known as the 'Hong Kong version of the Great Wall'. Starting from Sheung Shui Fu Tei Au, the route is approximately 6 kilometers long, crossing several peaks including Cheung Po Tau, Shan Shan, Ma Tau Ling, and Chung Shan. Along the way, you can see a vast expanse of beautiful silver grass, making it a great half-day trip in Hong Kong. If you want more, you can walk along Ping Che Road to Ping Che Mural Village. After seeing Kau Kee Store, walk for about 3 minutes to see the entrance of Cheuk Wing Kee Store. For the return trip, you can take the 79K bus back to Sheung Shui or the 52K minibus to Fanling.

Hong Kong Hiking Route: Easy 2-Hour Walk for Beginners
Transportation: Take bus 73K from Sheung Shui Train Station and get off at Fu Tei Au Public Toilet. However, the 73K bus runs infrequently, with intervals of 15-30 minutes.
Route: The first peak you will reach is Shan Shan. Start from the Fu Tei Au Public Toilet, cross the road and begin the ascent. The initial section is flat and shaded by trees on both sides. Looking to the right, you can enjoy the scenery of the Ng Tung River area. The descent from Shan Shan to Wah Shan is quite steep, with large patches of golden Miscanthus grass along the way, making for beautiful backlit photos! The Wah Shan hiking route can be completed in about 2 hours. Although there are some ups and downs along the way, it requires a certain level of physical fitness, but beginners can easily complete it at a slow pace. A must-visit for newcomers!

Hong Kong version of the Great Wall: Huashan in Sheung Shui
Hong Kong also has a hiking trail that resembles the Great Wall, which is Huashanjun Road in Sheung Shui. Because the continuous mountain road crosses many peaks such as Changfutou, Shanshan, Matouling, Songshan, etc., and the mountains are connected to each other, and the ridges are crossed, forming a winding mountain road, at first glance it is called the "Hong Kong version of the Great Wall." The biggest feature of this trail is the very open scenery. You can see Wutong Mountain in Shenzhen and Wutong River in Hong Kong in the distance.
The whole journey only takes 2 hours. Most of the way is concrete road and there are no stairs. Before departure, remember to check the PLA's target practice time. According to the government news bulletin in October, there are opportunities to practice target shooting at the Daling Shooting Range from Monday to Saturday except Sunday. Please do not enter the shooting range.
