A Jardin Anglais, English garden, formally named a public park in 1860, Bois de Vincennes, named for the nearby village of Vincennes, serves a crucial role in a system of parks colloquially named the "lungs of Paris." Situated on the river Marne, the 995 hectare park occupies nearly triple the space of New York City's Central Park. It remained the lawn and king's hunting grounds for the nearby castle, Chateau de Vincente, beginning with the castle's construction between 1340 and 1410, and ending during the French Revolution. Four lakes, a zoo, and English style landscaping create a romantic renaissance-era atmosphere.
