[2025 Kuala Lumpur Restaurant] Travel Guide for VCR (Updated Mar)

#celebrateit VCR is one of those places which no coffee lover would not know. It’s been around for a long while, and there’s a year (or some years) where it got listed as top 50 coffee in Asia. With that, it’s no surprise that the coffee is quality guaranteed. Their house blend was smooth yet bold with a nutty finish. What I newly tried was their chocolate tart. The rich velvety hazelnutty ganache atop a crumbly buttery base was pure indulgence—but I personally think it’s best served with about 10min in room temperature. Else it would be a bit dense and hard (like in the picture). One of their signature items is soft shell crab burger. Yes it’s pricey, but you don’t get to enjoy soft shell crab of that size, and the flavor combination is nice too, with the seaweed and eggyolk umami. In term of the ambience, its wooden two-floor setup feels pretty tropical. Not the most appealing vibe to me, but it could be the most unique to foreign tourists from colder climate.

VCR is just a five-minute walk from Hang Tuah Station. Look for the black house, and you've found it. There seem to be several schools nearby, as I encountered many students hanging out when I arrived. Upon entering, I noticed a small black cat sleeping on the VCR sign, adding to the café's laid-back vibe, which I absolutely love. The café has two floors, with the upstairs area being larger and more comfortable. There's a corner with floor-to-ceiling windows where you can sit by the window and enjoy a cup of coffee, feeling utterly relaxed. The café operates on a semi-self-service model. You place your order at the counter downstairs, get a number, and a staff member will bring your food and drinks to you later. On this day, I suddenly felt health-conscious and ordered avocado toast. A generous amount of mashed avocado covered the entire toast, topped with plenty of quinoa and arugula, making it feel very healthy. A wobbly sunny-side-up egg on top makes it Instagram-worthy and, of course, enhances the flavor. Since I was already here, I decided to try their cake and chose a piece of raspberry cheesecake from the display. The cake was soft, with a mild cheese flavor, complemented by the tangy raspberry sauce, making it refreshing and delicious. Personally, I could handle a stronger cheese flavor, which I think would make it even more appealing. The Flat White was also quite impressive. I later found out online that the barista here is award-winning, which explains a lot! It's lamentable how expensive a cup of coffee is in Hong Kong—world-class expensive. #malaysiatrip Totally recommendable!!! We went here almost every day for breakfast and could already call it our favourite place. The breakfast selection seems rather small at first glance, but these few dishes are so delicious! We tried something new every day and were surprised every day. The service is very friendly and the atmosphere here is very relaxed. Compared to other restaurants, it's not too air-conditioned here, which we found very good.

We ordered some of the signature dishes recommended in the menu, all are tasty and yummy. Avg. Price per Person - reasonable price.
