Savor Award-Winning Coffee
VCR is just a five-minute walk from Hang Tuah Station. Look for the black house, and you've found it. There seem to be several schools nearby, as I encountered many students hanging out when I arrived.
Upon entering, I noticed a small black cat sleeping on the VCR sign, adding to the café's laid-back vibe, which I absolutely love.
The café has two floors, with the upstairs area being larger and more comfortable. There's a corner with floor-to-ceiling windows where you can sit by the window and enjoy a cup of coffee, feeling utterly relaxed.
The café operates on a semi-self-service model. You place your order at the counter downstairs, get a number, and a staff member will bring your food and drinks to you later.
On this day, I suddenly felt health-conscious and ordered avocado toast. A generous amount of mashed avocado covered the entire toast, topped with plenty of quinoa and arugula, making it feel very healthy. A wobbly sunny-side-up egg on top makes it Instagram-worthy and, of course, enhances the flavor.
Since I was already here, I decided to try their cake and chose a piece of raspberry cheesecake from the display. The cake was soft, with a mild cheese flavor, complemented by the tangy raspberry sauce, making it refreshing and delicious. Personally, I could handle a stronger cheese flavor, which I think would make it even more appealing.
The Flat White was also quite impressive. I later found out online that the barista here is award-winning, which explains a lot!
It's lamentable how expensive a cup of coffee is in Hong Kong—world-class expensive.
