[2025 Nagasaki Attraction] Travel Guide for Ōura Cathedral (Updated Apr)

On a whim, I came up with a one-day trip to Nagasaki. I started from Saga and walked the whole way after arriving in Nagasaki. Because I saw the Atomic Bomb Museum in Hiroshima, I didn’t take the time to see it in Nagasaki. 🚞Transportation: 4,100 yen one way 1⃣️ Go to: (section) Saga-Takeo; (Shinkansen) Takeo-Nagasaki 2⃣️Reply: (Shinkansen) Nagasaki-Takeo; (Intersection) Takeo-Saga 🚶🏽‍♀️ Route 1⃣️ おFood Office Jiumeien (This building is the thinnest!) The restaurant is closed on Sundays, so you can only take a photo and check in before leaving. 10 minutes walk from the station 📍 1-36 Nakamachi, Nagasaki 2⃣️ Suwa Shrine A shrine for weddings/celebrations in the Nagasaki area. It happened that September 1st happened to be an event that might be preparing for the October event, and I saw a very traditional Japanese festival. The guardian is very beautiful. I have been to so many shrines, but I only saw the guardian here. Behind the main hall is Inari Shrine and a large tree. It is recommended to go up and have a look. You need to walk up a long flight of stairs to reach the shrine, so remember to save your energy! It takes 10 minutes to walk to the thinnest building 💰 Free 📍 18-15 Kaminishiyama-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture 3⃣️ Glasses Bridge + Love Stone The main idea is to refer to the sightseeing map. Undoubtedly, Mount Inasa is the most popular spot for night view viewing, where you can have a bird's eye view of Nagasaki's Usugata city, but it will be quite far if you live in Glover Hill. In fact, the night view of Kanyama Park, which is about a 2-minute walk from the second gate of Glover Garden, is also one of the most beautiful night views in Nagasaki. You can see the night view of the Goddess Bridge, the port, and Nagasaki city from the side instead of a bird's eye view. It is not as crowded as Mt. Inasa, and you can enjoy the night view from the beautiful observatory that was renovated in 2014. You are also lucky enough to see the night cherry blossoms. It is the oldest surviving church in Japan. Some of the stained glass that decorates the interior of the cathedral is about 100 years old. The church is dedicated to the 26 Martyrs of Japan, who were canonized in 1862, just before the church was built, and the front of the cathedral faces Nishizaka, the site of their martyrdom. The construction of Urakami Church (Urakami Cathedral) was planned in 1873 by the believers of Urakami, who had gained their freedom after the ban on Christian persecution was lifted. However, funds were hard to come by, and after more than 20 years, construction of the church, designed by Father Freno, finally began in 1895, and the dedication ceremony was held in 1914 as the largest brick Romanesque cathedral in the Orient. French-made Angelus bells were installed in the twin towers at the front, but in 1945 the building was destroyed by the atomic bomb, and the Angelus bells collapsed along with the bell tower. The current building was rebuilt in 1959 using reinforced concrete, and was renovated with brick tiles in 1980, restoring it to its original appearance.

From Hakata Station, you can get to Nagasaki in about an hour and a half by taking the limited express train and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Let's take a ride on the streetcar full of Japanese sensibility and go to Oura Cathedral.

The shrine at night is quite different from the shrine during the day. Pictures 3-6 show the comparison between the shrine at night and during the day. 🚉Transportation tips: City transportation: Getting to several main attractions is convenient, Nagasaki has no subway, the main means of transportation in the city are trams and buses. You can buy a 24-hour pass for the tram, which covers all the main attractions, priced at 700 yen, I bought the electronic ticket on the Japan Transit Planner app, just show it to the driver when getting off. Intercity transportation: My itinerary was Fukuoka-Yufuin-Nagasaki-Fukuoka, from Yufuin to Nagasaki you need to transfer 3 times, so it's much more convenient to go directly from Fukuoka to Nagasaki, with one less transfer. Just follow the transfer guide app or Google map for the transfer plan, the transfers are all within the station, the platforms are very close to each other, use the Kitakyushu JR Pass for the entire journey on the Shinkansen, find the non-reserved seat car and sit down, show the JR Pass to the conductor when they check tickets, no need to buy an additional ticket.

Oura Cathedral in Nagasaki city. The road to get here is tough. Cobblestone roads, steep slopes. I was pulling a carrier on top of that, so I ended up working out. When you're walking around with luggage, I definitely recommend a backpack. Especially when sightseeing in Nagasaki city... ⁡ The tram is convenient for getting here. A fixed fare of 140 yen per ride. There are one-day passes, but I don't think it's worth it unless you ride a lot...
