Today, I'm going to introduce you to the reliable Taeha Lighthouse that protects Ulleungdo residents who travel a lot by boat. 🤗 Taeha Lighthouse is located on the top of a mountain, so it's good to walk along the beach in front and then hike up to the lighthouse. 🤩 I thought hiking was too hard, so I took the monorail up to the lighthouse. 🤣 The monorail was also fun. 🤭 I thought the lighthouse wouldn't be anything special, but it was bigger than I thought! I had a lot of trouble deciding on where to stay in Ulleungdo, but I decided on Daon Prime, which is close to Jeodong Port. The room we were assigned was on the 6th floor, and even though there was construction going on right in front of the hotel, we could see the ocean clearly. It was ocean view, so we could watch the sunrise in the morning. What is the most delicious food in Ulleungdo? On the first day, as soon as I arrived, I ran to the Jeodong Port food alley and visited a famous restaurant that a sikgaek had visited. I ordered Osam Bulgogi and Tadak Kalguksu, and it was definitely worth a sikgaek. That evening, I visited Dokdo Restaurant and had Jajangmyeon and Jjambbong. The Jjajang was a bit salty, but the Jjambbong was really delicious. The seafood was incredibly fresh. The next day, while driving along the coastal road, I went to Daepung Restaurant near Hyeonpo Port. This place was famous for its local cuisine. As expected, I ordered Osam Bulgogi and Galbitang, and the Galbitang was really delicious. And for my last dinner, I chose Makchang and Samgyeopsal! The meat was just okay, but the Doenjang Jjigae was truly a work of art. Cafe Ulla, the cafe with the best view in Ulleungdo, which is currently popular. This cafe is located on the first floor of Healing Stay Kosmos, the most luxurious accommodation in Ulleungdo, and is open to the public even if you are not a hotel guest. It is located on the relatively quiet northern part of the island, so you can enjoy a quiet time and enjoy the sea and mountains at the same time. The signature menu items are cube latte and shaved ice with ice shaped like the mascot gorilla Ulla. It is so cute that it is a shame to eat it. The ferry ride over is a bit of a journey (prepare yourself lol), but once you’re there? Totally worth it. This island is unreal. Like, cliffs for days, the bluest water ever, and everything just feels untouched and peaceful in the best way. I did a bit of hiking (read: slow walking with snack breaks), and every corner had some “wait I need a photo” moment. The coastal road is literally made for cruising with music and zero stress. The food? Insane. I had fresh squid that was probably caught like an hour before I ate it. Plus, locals are super friendly, chill and welcoming without being all up in your space. Notably, the owner of the store is the very fisherman who provided the Dokdo Shrimp for the Korea-US summit dinner, adding to its credibility. Upon entering the store, you'll be greeted by a warm wood-toned ambiance and a bustling crowd of customers. After placing your order, the staff will prepare three types of Dokdo Shrimp (Tiger Shrimp, Chicken Shrimp, and Flower Shrimp) right in front of you. The shrimp heads are served as crispy tempura, offering a unique flavor experience. The shrimp meat is incredibly firm and juicy, far superior to regular shrimp, filling your mouth with a rich and savory taste. The roe-filled parts are slightly salty and have a delightful chewiness, making it a must-try for food enthusiasts. While the price may seem a bit high, the unique experience of enjoying Dokdo Shrimp on Ulleungdo makes it worth trying at least once. Getting there is half the adventure, a ferry ride over wild blue seas, and then bam, you’re on this volcanic island with cliffs, sea breeze, and insane views. I spent a few days just wandering around the coastal trails, which wrap right around the island. Super walkable, with hidden stairs, dramatic rocks, and cute little villages tucked in every corner. The hike up to Seonginbong Peak was no joke, though, steep and sweaty, but so worth it. Forests, birds, and views that make your jaw drop. You get these insane panoramas of the ocean and the island’s crazy coastline. And yes, I took the boat to Dokdo! It’s more of a brief visit than a full hike, but just standing there, looking out over the sea from this legendary little rock, it felt surreal. Ulleungdo’s like Korea’s best-kept island secret, and if you get lucky with the weather, it’s a total dream. Would go again in a heartbeat.

We visited Ulla Cafe by car, and the spacious and free parking lot made it convenient to park without any hassle. The view of Songgot Mountain right in front of the parking lot is truly impressive. At the entrance of the cafe, the Ulla mascot—a gorilla character—welcomes visitors, making it a perfect spot for taking photos. Interestingly, "Ulla" is short for "Ulleungdo Gorilla," and it seems to have become a representative character of Ulleungdo. Inside the cafe, the stylish architectural design immediately catches your eye, and they offer a variety of goods and souvenirs for sale. The gorilla character is so adorable that I couldn’t help but want to buy a plush toy. We settled down and ordered an Americano and a Cafe Latte: - Iced Americano: 7,000 KRW - Iced Cafe Latte: 7,500 KRW Although the prices are slightly higher, likely due to the location on Ulleungdo, the coffee was clean and refreshing—perfect for a quick break during our trip. When you order drinks, they give you a cute buzzer with Ulla’s face on it, allowing you to explore the surroundings while waiting. The cafe is filled with photo spots both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor photo zone with Songgot Mountain as the backdrop is ideal for capturing memorable shots. Sitting next to the Ulla character sculpture and taking a photo felt like creating a special memory of our Ulleungdo trip. Outside the cafe, you can also see the installation art featuring the hanbok suit worn by BTS’s Suga. The unique artworks, set against the backdrop of the Ulleungdo sea, are truly impressive. The highlight of my Ulleungdo trip was undoubtedly the 'Dokdo Tour.' We departed early in the morning from Dodong Port and took a boat ride for about an hour and a half. As we approached, the silhouette of Dokdo began to emerge beyond the horizon. It was much larger and more majestic than I had imagined, and just seeing it from afar was deeply moving. Unfortunately, due to strong winds and waves, we couldn't land on Dokdo. However, even just circling around it on the boat and taking in the view was meaningful enough. It felt special to confirm with my own eyes that 'this land is undoubtedly part of Korea.' On the way back to Ulleungdo, near Dodong Port, I tried the famous barnacle kalguksu (knife-cut noodles). The warm broth was infused with the essence of the sea, and the chewy noodles paired perfectly with the tender barnacle meat. It was a meal that warmed both my body and soul. Although I couldn't physically step onto Dokdo, the journey from Ulleungdo to Dokdo itself was an experience that every Korean should have at least once in their lifetime.
