Dong Ping
Dong Ping Chau: A must-visit secret island day trip guide for Hong Kongers 🏝️
I'm used to walking on urban trails, but this time I went to the secret place in the northeast corner of Hong Kong - Tung Ping Chau! Tung Ping Chau is not just a geopark. The island picnic trail connects various natural attractions. In one day, you can go around the whole island and completely feel the healing feeling of "off-island". Perfect for those who want to escape the urban crowds for a while, embrace nature, and take pictures of the beautiful scenery of the coastal rocks!
This guide will take you [Pier>Cheung Sha Wan Beach>Cham Neck Chau>Dragon into the Water>Not Over the Water>Gengloushi>Ama Bay>Pier], a day around the island experience, not afraid of getting lost, not afraid of missing the beautiful scenery, guaranteed to have surprises every step of the way!
🌊Tung Ping Chau attractions recommended round the island line
1. East Ping Chau Pier
As soon as you get off the boat, you can already feel a completely different atmosphere from the main island of Hong Kong! There is a simple store near the pier where you can replenish water and snacks, and it is recommended to prepare drinking water before hiking the island.
2. Cheung Sha Wan Beach
Walk along the coast and you will reach the beach in Cheung Sha Wan in less than a few minutes. The beach area is small but quiet enough, and you can see the clear water and blue sky in the distance, perfect for the first stop to take pictures.
3. Chop Neck Island
The most characteristic geological attraction in Dongping Chau is that the rocks are washed away by sea water for many years to form narrow ridges due to mottled mudstone! A must-visit for photography, especially along the trail to the top location, the entire sea view is super spectacular.
4. The dragon falls into the water
Dragon Falls is another unbeatable sea spot, with a cliffside location overlooking the open sea. Note that some parts of the path are steeper and slippery with stone steps. Remember to double your safety on rainy days!
5. Harder than water
The sea erosion cave here is a hidden version of the attraction, which will only be discovered if you look carefully along the countryside trail. The sound of sea water lapping against the rock walls is healing and super cool for summer.
6. More floor stone
Iconic geological wonder rock, the rock resembles a "shift building", super suitable for shooting blockbusters. This is also one of the best places to watch the sunset. You might as well reserve time to enjoy it slowly.
7. Ama Bay
The last stop, Ama Bay, has a campground and snack kiosks on the shore. After walking around, you can take a break at A-Ma Bay to replenish your strength and then slowly walk back to the pier.
📌 Tips
- The total distance around the island in one day is about 6 kilometers, normal pace can be completed in 4 hours. However, there are too many beautiful scenery along the way, taking pictures and walking slowly is safer to allow 6 hours!
- Supplies are limited on the island, so it is recommended to bring enough water, dry food, and sunscreen.
- Transportation to the downtown area requires a ferry via Ma Yau Wai Pier (about 1.5 hours).
- Take away the garbage on the island, be a well-meaning person to protect nature!
🍴Gourmet supplements
Although there are not many store options on the island, you can find a cha chaan teng near Ma Yau Wai to treat your stomach on the return trip, or bring your own sandwiches and rice balls to Ama Bay for a picnic, guaranteed to chill and enjoy the sea view.
Although the route is not difficult, remember to wear comfortable sneakers. There are many mosquitoes in the countryside. You can bring mosquito repellent. It is best for friends to joke and take pictures together to add fun!
