#Cable car Tsugaike Plateau is a great place for hiking in the summer and a famous ski resort in the winter. Taking the cable car up and down the mountain is a very comfortable trip. Starting from Tsugaike Plateau, you need to take two types of cable cars, and the scenery is super beautiful. It also feels like taking a cable car in Switzerland. The first is a small cable car like the Jiu Zu Cable Car. Because there are few tourists, our family can take a car by ourselves. It takes about 20 minutes, and then we walk a short distance to change to a large cable car and continue to ride for about 7 minutes. Tsugaike's Gondola box cable car (large cable car) is 4,120 meters long and is one of the longest cable car lines in Japan. There were staff members on the large cable car giving explanations. Although they were speaking Japanese and I couldn't understand them, I knew they were explaining the ecology of nearby plants. The most special thing was the many purple cones on the treetops. I checked and it should be the purple cones of fir. We went to Tsugaike Nature Park on Tsugaike Plateau, where you can enter for free with your cable car ticket. The park is really ecologically rich, with many flowers blooming in summer. Tsugaike Kogen Station is the entrance to Tsugaike Nature Park, one of Japan's most famous spots for viewing autumn leaves, and the ropeway station that serves as the gateway to hiking Mt. Hakuba. Tsugaike Kogen becomes a ski resort in the winter, and the ropeway facilities are also very well-equipped. The exterior looks relatively new. After an epic day skiing at Tsugaike Kogen, I wandered into a little local convini —Yamazaki Shop (12840-1 Chikuniotsu, Otari)—just down the road from the resort. I wasn’t expecting much, maybe a warm drink or a snack. But what I found was next-level. Strawberries. Giant ones. Literally as big as my palm. I had to do a double take. Perfectly red, glossy, and fragrant, they were irresistibly sweet with just the right touch of tartness. I later found out they were likely Benihoppe—a premium variety often grown in Nagano and Shizuoka. It made total sense, because they tasted like they’d been picked at the exact perfect moment. Eating those strawberries outside the shop, snow still clinging to my boots, with the mountains glowing in the late afternoon light—pure magic. One of those unexpected, unforgettable travel moments.

Our visit to Tsugaike Kogen Ski Area in early February was fantastic. We were incredibly lucky to experience three straight days of wonderful powder snow – that light, fresh snow that makes skiing feel amazing. Planning how to get to Tsugaike is fairly simple. However, the direct shuttle bus service to the ski area doesn't run very often, which can make the journey a little difficult. On the bright side, perhaps this limited access helps keep the slopes less crowded, creating a more relaxed feeling compared to busier resorts. For us, the excellent snow and slopes definitely made the extra travel planning worthwhile. Tsugaike really impressed us with its ski slopes, especially for skiers who are learning or want to improve. * Excellent Beginner Area: The main beginner area is outstanding – honestly the biggest and widest I've ever encountered! This huge, gentle slope is perfect for new skiers to practice safely and build their confidence without feeling rushed. * Variety for Everyone: But Tsugaike offers more than just beginner terrain. We enjoyed the nice, long ski runs through the forest, which offer beautiful scenery. There are also plenty of enjoyable slopes for intermediate skiers (those with some experience), plus some more challenging runs for advanced skiers to explore. * Powder Day Joy: During the powder days, the whole mountain was incredible. The wide beginner slopes became soft, snowy playgrounds perfect for learning to ski powder, while the forest runs offered lots of deep snow for fun turns. Overall Thoughts: While you'll need to plan your bus travel carefully, the reward is a superb ski area. Tsugaike features one of the best beginner zones available anywhere, combined with great terrain for improving your skills. Plus, you might get lucky with unforgettable powder snow, just like we did. Overall, Tsugaike Kogen provided a wonderful and memorable ski experience.

The elevation of Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort is about 1500 meters, but Tsugaike Nature Park is even higher, ranging from 1800 to 2000 meters. The elevation of Hakuba Village is about 650 to 700 meters. It's said that for every 100 meters you go up, the temperature drops by 0.6°C, so it's simply more than 6°C cooler than Hakuba Village. Compared to Tokyo or coastal cities, it's even cooler! No wonder it's so cool, lol. It's not surprising that there's still snow. The nature park has an elevation difference of 200 meters, so it's a decent hike. The paths are mostly well-maintained wooden walkways, making it easy to walk, but hiking shoes are still recommended. The main attraction is the "Observation Marsh" at the far end, where you can view the Hakuba Daisekkei and the Northern Alps. There's a deck where you can relax and have lunch or a snack. It might be crowded depending on the timing, though... To access the nature park, you need to take a gondola and then a ropeway. The ropeway operates at 40-minute intervals, so if you don't time it right, you might end up waiting about 40 minutes at the mid-station. Be careful! It takes about 3.5 to 4 hours to walk around the nature park, so if you go around noon and miss the ropeway timing, you might not have time to relax... So, it's safer to go early to have plenty of time!

#thingstodo This is Tsugaike Mountain Resort. Visited on the end of Jan 2024 for skiing. Unfortunately, there is no fresh powder snow as it hasn't snowed in the last several days, however the slopes are perfectly groomed and compressed. Flat, wide and long, the pistes for expert are excellent as well as for behinners. There are 4 car parking lots around the resort. Recommended the Champion Car Parking Lot where you can park for free on weekdays and weekends from 6:00 to 18:00. It takes about a minute to walk to the nearest slope. Ski straight down the slope in a couple of minutes, you will reach the ticket office then. No deposit is required for a lift ticket, so you can go straight back to this parking lot

In the winter, you have to play snow. On New Year's Day, you will come to Japan for a long holiday. The Meichi Plateau Snow Field is the simplest one in the snow fields of Nagano.
