Tochouji Temple is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Tofukuji school located in Aoba-cho, Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is one of the five Zen temples in Kitayama, Sendai. The temple's mountain name is Muizan, and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. It was founded in the Kamakura period by Date Masayori in Date-gun, Mutsu Province, and was protected by the Date clan for generations. It was designated as Ankokuji Temple of Mutsu Province and, along with Zuiganji Temple, was one of the few temples in the Tohoku region to be designated as a prominent temple.
Located near the famous Aoba Shrine, this Rinzai Zen temple is situated at a high elevation, similar to neighboring temples, and has many stone steps.
