[San Gimignano, Italy] The beautiful town of towers
#FreeHotelStay
San Gimignano is a small town in the Tuscany region of Italy that is a World Heritage Site and is known as the town of beautiful towers. There is no train service, so we recommend traveling by bus from Florence. It takes about 50 minutes from Florence to Poggiponsi, and about 20 minutes from Poggiponsi to San Gimignano, so you will need to change trains.
San Gimignano, located on a small hill, has 14 towers, and it is surprising that at its peak there were more than 70 towers in this small town. The towers were built as symbols of rights disputes, but some are now part of houses, and few are open to the public.
Anyone can climb the 54m tall Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in the town and attached to the Palazzo del Popolo, which houses San Gimignano's town hall.
The stairs and the space at the top of the tower are not very large, but we recommend it as it is a great spot to see the whole of San Gimignano's townscape below.
