The 3rd Tunnel Walkway at Demilitarized Zone located in 산167-1 Jeomwon-ri, Gunnae-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It is one of the four known tunnels under the border of North Korea and South Korea, and was discovered in 1978. #AprilGoodDestinations2025 South Korea's "Third Tunnel" is an underground passage secretly dug by North Korea in an attempt to invade Seoul. This time I had the opportunity to personally walk into this historical relic hidden deep underground. For me, it was not just a trip, but a real experience of the tension on the Korean Peninsula. Before entering the tunnel, the guide video briefly introduced the background: The Third Tunnel was discovered by South Korea in 1978, only about 50 kilometers away from Seoul, with a length of more than 1.6 kilometers. Although it is not wide, it is enough for tens of thousands of soldiers to pass through in a short period of time. As I put on my hard hat and slowly walked along the narrow and damp passage, the tensions of the Cold War and the preparations made by both sides for survival kept emerging in my mind. The tunnel is low and long, with my head constantly hitting the rock wall. I deeply felt the hardships the soldiers endured while digging and the oppression of the secret operation. When we finally arrived at the blockade area and saw the heavy blast-proof doors and iron fences, at that moment, I was no longer just a tourist, but was brought into a piece of history that has not yet been completed. Walking out of the tunnel and back into the sunlight on the ground, I couldn't help but reflect: Although peace may seem calm, there are often countless hidden conflicts and confrontations behind it. The Third Tunnel made me better understand South Korea’s vigilance towards national security, and made me cherish the stability and freedom I have now. This visit not only allowed me to learn about a relic of the Cold War, but also reminded me that peace is never taken for granted, but requires constant protection and the result of dialogue.

I went to Seoul, Korea and ate a lot of delicious food, including abalone porridge, kalbi, and yukhoe. I took a walk in the park and saw Namsan Tower. It was raining, but the nature was very beautiful. It was clean and there was a lot of greenery, and I felt very refreshed. There were many Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Myeongdong Seoso Kalbi, Sowon's abalone porridge, the Michelin-starred restaurant's raw octopus and beef yukhoe (I forgot the name), and Chen Yuhua's Dakgalbi. There was a line, but the broth was very flavorful and it was delicious. The crowded restaurants were well-organized and the wait wasn't painful.

It contains remembrance of bitter past and remnants of what different in ideology would have caused a common nation to be split into two. Hired a company to take us on the DMZ tour. We got lucky and everything was open and we were able to go. I will warn that there is a lot of walking and hiking. Korea is a very hilly/mountainous place. This picture is from the 3rd Tunnel site. It’s very interesting to see just how far and close North Korea came to getting in. It’s not far from the city and big enough for many solders and weapons. So it’s interesting to see the site.

#seoul As part of my DMZ tour, I got to visit The Third Infiltration Tunnel, which was seemingly dug by North Korea in an attempt to invade South Korea. The Tunnel was discovered in 1978, and it is about 1635m in length and 2m wide. The guide reminded tourists with health conditions to sit at the waiting area, as the tunnel climb back up might be quite strenuous due to the steepness of the slope. By visiting this Tunnel, tourists are literally going into the DMZ underground. All belongings had to be kept in lockers before entering the tunnel and no cameras / phones / electronic devices were allowed. My rating of this attraction: 4.5 ⭐️ out of 5!
