From the moments we checked until we checked out, it was nothing but just pleasant. The room that we had was massive which is fully equipped with everything that you need and want from a luxury hotel. They even welcomed us with anniversary gifts in our room and all the staff was very welcoming. We stayed there for two nights and had dinner at Tivano and our experience was PERFECT. These expensive windows effectively blocked out the urban clamor, but also sealed away the authentic pulse of city life. The next morning at breakfast, the restaurant displayed an impressive array of both Chinese and Western dishes, plated so exquisitely one almost felt guilty disturbing them. At a nearby table, a young couple sat - the wife complaining about some sauce's authenticity while her husband nodded absently, eyes fixed on his phone. A server stood nearby, maintaining that measured smile, though the fatigue in her eyes had deepened. After breakfast, I wandered through the hotel and found a space labeled as a "cultural area" - essentially a shop selling overpriced crafts and books. The shelves held pristine hardcovers, mostly biographies and self-help books, their spines gleaming gold but showing little sign of use. A guest briefly picked up a book, quickly set it down, apparently uninterested, and moved on to examine the startlingly expensive tea sets. The rooftop pool's water was an unnaturally perfect blue. Several guests sunbathed poolside, their skin already lobster-red, yet still diligently applying tanning oil. Their poses resembled a solemn ritual - as if making offerings to the sun god. During checkout, the front desk asked about my stay. I said it was fine, though privately thinking how exhausting such a meticulously calculated place was, where even guest smiles seemed pre-designed. They offered me a membership card for room upgrades on future visits. I thanked them and pocketed it, knowing it would end up with other expired promo codes. Last time I had to choose between this hotel and Six Senses in Qingcheng Mountain. Friends all recommended this hotel, but I regretted it after staying here. It feels like a very ordinary boutique hotel. Maybe the air is better than Six Senses. As part of Taikoo Li, this hotel has an antique feel from the outside and with the iconic red and green lanterns, you'd think you were staying in an old house. But in fact, when you get to the room, it's decorated in a modern Park Hyatt style, which is dark and a bit depressing, and totally out of place. Then there are the plants in the hotel, which are much inferior to the sunshine. They feel just cobbled together and lack a sense of luxury. I have always felt that the Middle House is the only residential series in the Swire Group that has done its job well, while the others are just hyped up, looking good but not practical, and having poor cost-effectiveness. I plan to try Niccolo next time, and I look forward to better new hotels opening in Chengdu.
