Unlike Mutianyu in Beijing, this location is much quieter. Who says you have to go to Beijing if you want to see the Great Wall of China? Head over to Jiayuguan in Gansu province to visit the western end of the Great Wall! There are three main places to visit in Jiayuguan: the Jiayuguan Fortress, the Overhanging Great Wall, and the First Pier of the Great Wall. The Overhanging Great Wall is about 7 km from the Jiayuguan Fortress, and is the furthest of the three must-see attractions. It hangs in the air on the ridge and was restored in 1987. The wall is narrow (like an ancient stockade gate) and the mountain is not high, so you can enjoy a panoramic view of the northwest. The First Pier of the Great Wall is the starting point of the Ming Great Wall. After years of weathering, only a mound of earth remains. Next to it is the Taolai River Valley, where the desert, canyon, and river are all spectacular. The Jiayuguan Fortress is located between the two attractions and is the most popular of the three. With the Qilian Mountains to the left and the Heishan Mountains to the right, the fortress is surrounded by a vast desert. The gate stands alone, facing northwest towards Chang'an. We decided to start with the Fort, but thinking back, we should have started with the wall to avoid the crowds and the heat. We decided to skip the first mound as it would have cost us some more money to go there and we weren't sure it would have been worth it. The Fort: the main entrance is really well done and has a nice visitor center with a movie playing all day round explaining shortly the history of the Fort. You will then have to take the scenic bus to go to the Fort (they are shaped like a camel, which is so cute 🐫). It's free of charge. Once there, you will be free to roam around the Fort and explore. The temple inside offers nice murals with what seemed to be a story written under. There are a few food options, which is a nice touch. You can also ride a camel which looks so much fun. However, if you can, you should definitely come at night for the mapping show, it looked amazing! Of course, it has an extra cost, but from what we've seen, it's definitely worth it! Ride the bus back to the main entrance. Of you have time, you can go down before at the museum to learn more about the area. We then exited the area and went to the next place by taxi. The Great Wall: your tour should definitely start there. It can get quite hot because of the sun, and let's be honest, the way up is not that easy. However, it is very rewarding and offer magnificent views. Lots of people put locks in the area to seal their love, and also create a heart shape with rocks on the mountain, it's really beautiful to see. If you are a bit adventurous and have good equipment, you can wander a bit farther in the mountain and enjoy the breathtaking view of this wonderful natural landscape. We only stayed around three hours total, but if you go to the first mound, you might need another hours, so allow at least half a day to tour the area.
