The Hue Citadel is the living quarters and administrative center of the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam. Starting with King Gia Long, 13 kings of the Nguyen Dynasty lived there continuously until the dynasty ended after King Bao Dai's abdication in August 1945. The Hue Citadel has 4 gates arranged on 4 sides with the main gate in the South being Ngo Mon, the North being Hoa Binh Gate, the West being Chuong Duc Gate and the East being Hien Nhon Gate. In front of Ngo Mon Gate is the Hue Flag Tower and the square, where cultural and artistic activities take place during holidays. The Imperial Citadel and the entire palace system inside follow the principle of "left men, right women", "left literature, right martial arts".
