The King's Gallery is a public art gallery located in Buckingham Palace in London, England. It displays art from the British royal family's collection, with about 450 pieces on display at ordinary times. The King's Gallery is located on the west side of Buckingham House, on the site of a chapel that was bombed during World War II. It was opened to the public in 1962. Before it was closed from 1999 to 2002, the King's Gallery attracted 5 million visitors in 37 years. Special Exhibition: Edwardian: The Age of Elegance 11 April – 23 November 2025 This major new exhibition will immerse visitors in the grandeur of the Edwardian era – the period between the Victorian era and the First World War. Visitors will learn about the lives and tastes of two of Britain's most fashionable royal couples - King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and King George V and Queen Mary, from their family life and personal collections to their glamorous social circles and spectacular royal events. It’s the Royal Collection Trust’s exhibition exploring the Edwardian era and will bring together more than 300 objects – almost half on display for the first time – including fashion, jewellery, paintings, photographs, books, sculpture and ceramics. Visitors will see works by very famous contemporary artists of the time, including Carl Fabergé, Frederic Leighton, Edward Burne-Jones, Lauritz Turkson, John Singer Sargent, Olive Edis, Philip de Laszlo, William Morris, Oscar Wilde and Edward Elgar. The King's Gallery at Buckingham Palace is an ongoing display of works of art from the Royal Collection, one of the most important art collections in the world. The Royal Collection is held by the monarch for the use of his successors and the nation. The Gallery is adjacent to Buckingham Palace and is located on the site of what was once Queen Victoria's private chapel. In 1940, the chapel was destroyed in an air raid. In 1962, on the advice of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, the chapel was converted into an art gallery for the Royal Collection. In 1997, a project began to expand and modernise the gallery, the most significant expansion of Buckingham Palace in 150 years. In 2002, the late Queen opened the gallery in its current form as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, previously known as the Queen's Gallery, and it will remain open until 2024.
