Otaru flourished as a commercial port town from the mid-Meiji period to the Taisho period, and the branches of various banks were concentrated here. The old Otaru branch of the Bank of Japan is one of the representatives. It was built in 1912. The appearance is in the Renaissance style. The roof is decorated with copper and equipped with 5 domes. The outer wall is made of red brick and painted with mortar. The structural parts are steel structures, concrete, etc., and were constructed using new technologies at the time. The marble counter and the theme of the Ezo owl, the patron saint of the Ainu, are preserved in the museum. It is now used as a library of the Bank of Japan, displaying various materials related to finance.
