Thames Town: A Cultural Retreat Worth Savoring
Yesterday an ancient town, today a slice of Europe—Shanghai offers a striking contrast between East and West. 🌺
Not far from the Guangfulin Relics (about 7 kilometers away), lies Thames Town. It's quite peaceful on weekday mornings. After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll to the town's main attractions: the Catholic Church, Zhongshuge Bookstore, Wushe River Walk, and Kent Avenue.
The architecture in the town exudes the vintage charm of a British village, making it incredibly photogenic. 🎞️
Zhongshuge Bookstore, hailed as the most beautiful bookstore in China, is adorned with books from floor to ceiling. The towering bookshelves are filled with classic works of foreign literature, and even the glass floor compartments are packed with various books, making it a truly unique bookstore. 👍
The town also boasts numerous restaurants. For lunch, enjoy Hong Kong-style cuisine at Shun Kee Tea Restaurant, then take a leisurely walk to the European aristocratic-themed Thinker's Rose Garden for afternoon tea. 🍵 The second floor features high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, a piano, and medieval bookshelves, creating an elegant dining atmosphere. 🎀
Visit Thames Town to explore bookstores, sip afternoon tea, and relish the slow-paced joys of travel. 💕

A Slice of home in Shanghai

I was feeling a little homesick, so we decided to travel to this little-explored place in Songjiang district of Shanghai. Thames town is a tiny replica of and English village, complete with church square, telephone boxes, and pubs!
There were loads of couples there taking wedding photos which made the trip even sweeter. We recommend spending time in the bookstore which has a couple of hidden photo spots inside.

Songjiang - THAMES TOWN - Check out
We heard about this place and decided to go check it out.
The town is very nice! Lovely little town to just walk around and escape Shanghai! You'll find Thames town on the outskirts of Shanghai in Songjiang District. It takes a while to get there via public transport so be prepared to spend a whole day (From the city about 1 - 1.5 hours by subway). Take line 9 to SongJiang University Town station, and after that a taxi (about 20RMB) another 10 to 15 min journey. Entry is free to the area.
You'll find several statues of British people/ characters, such as Shakespeare, Dickens, James Bond and Harry Potter along with rows of shops, homes and restaurants. Doesn’t feel like you are in China or Shanghai at all. On the edge of the town, you'll find a large lake. Many of the shops were closed or empty when I visited, but there were still plenty there, and many restaurants too, ranging from British to Italian to Chinese. The main attraction of visiting is to wander around the streets and enjoying the architecture and buildings, and I also enjoyed watching the Chinese couples having their wedding photos taken.
Take your time to walk around. You will feel like you are not in China but at the suburbs of an English town, complete with a square, a Catholic church, bridges over water, quaint coffee shops and bookstores, etc
Grainger & Co with stood out to me as a place with decent food/drink choices. Prices are relatively cheap here and not boosted up due to the tourist area.
Thames Town was completed in 2006, and it’s part of a government project “One City, Nine Towns” which aimed to build desirable places for citizens to live outside of the city. The aim was to attract people away from the center, thereby reducing congestion and overcrowding.
If you want to visit a copied English town and get a taste of a UK town here in Shanghai, come here!

Living like in Europe
Approximately 38km south-west of Shanghai downtown the European style Thames Town is located. I saw already a lot of posts from there and was curious about this place.
The big church can be seen already from distance and is a good starting point for a walk through the area which can be accessed by public.
The location can be found in Baidu with the original English name.

Leisure Cafe, Thames Town
#shinsider After walking around Thames Town for an hour, we dove into a cafe near the lake – Leisure Cafe. This was a cute little cafe with a varied menu of coffee, soft drinks, tea and desserts to indulge in.
They have a beautiful space, with a view that looks into the central garden courtyard surrounded by residential housing that surrounds the area.
Staff were very friendly, and were quick to deliver the Matcha Late that I ordered (and featured beautiful latte art too!).
Find it: Lane 900 Sanxin North Road, Thames Town. 10m from Songjiang Art Museum.

MugHug Cafe, Thames Town
#shinsider After exploring as much of Thames Town as possible, we were starting to get a little peckish and dove into one of the restaurant cafe’s nearby. Unfortunately, no fish and chips were found, but what we did have was still delicious!
MugHug Cafe had a decent selection of food to choose from (all in Chinese, so you’ll need to use a translator if you can’t read the characters) although the Western food options were pretty standard (pasta…). But I decided to eat the Beef Bibimbap which was absolutely delicious! It was served in the pot, was sizzling hot when it came out and was nicely spiced with a decent amount of beef (thicker cuts…) and vegetables. Plus the rice had a nice crispy bottom - yum!

Little London in SH
SH has a wide range of places worth seeing, but for me Thames Town has been one of interest for quite some time. The replica British city style is a stark reminder of home and how streets appear. Granted, there’s many more people stood photographing and more wedding shoots than you’d ever expect to see in London.
Take Subway line 9 to Songjiang University Town, then Tram 2 or DiDi.

Thames Town in Shanghai is fun to explore. There are a few choices for food and drink while you’re here. Grainger & Co stood out to me as a place with live music and decent food/drink choice.
Prices are relatively cheap here and not boosted up due to the tourist area.

London in Shanghai
Thames Town, Shanghai has been on my list of places to see for a long time! Subway Line 9 to Songjiang University Town then either a bus or tram line into Thames Town. I’m lazy, I took a didi for 22RMB. Entry is free to the area, it’s a nice walk especially on a clear day. We saw many wedding shoots happening here as well.

“My Name is Bond. James Bond.”
Here’s a complimentary post on top of my previous VLOG of Thames Town, Shanghai.
There are so many statues being displayed all around the small town, and I only took a handful of them. Mostly are well-known British characters (including fictional ones like Bond and Harry Potter), and the rest are tasteful piece of arts.
Let me know if you spot them on your next trip to Thames Town! 😉
________________
Getting There - take Metro line 9 to Songjiang University Town, then take taxi for 10-15minutes (there are several public buses, too). Depending on where you’re from, it can take 1-2hours to get there.
Attractions - residential area that imitates some London’s town. Perfect for photoshoots or just some afternoon stroll. There are a couple of art museums, too.
Hotels - there are some hotels in the area, but if you live in Shanghai, staying overnight here is not necessary (unless you have other places to visit in Songjiang district)
Food & Restaurants - main restaurant is Granger & Co., foods are quite good (no vegan option, only green salads and chips), ambiance is nice. There are some other smaller restaurants and many many coffeeshops as well.
Shopping - some shops in Carnaby Island area.

Thames Town 🇨🇳 Shanghai
Welcome to the UK 🇬🇧 Shanghai style.
It's a fun little town all set for you to take photos. From the Cathedral which will have the wedding photo shoots all set up, to the statue of Winston Churchill and the old English style of houses it's fun to see.
Thames Town in Songjiang district Shanghai isn't a destination for those missing home, you won't find Yorkshire puddings and Devonshire Toffee, but you will find Starbucks and a Baskin Robbins.
Getting There- Lots of options are available. The line 9 metro to Songjiang will get you within walking distance, a taxi will take around an hour from downtown Shanghai on a weekend or you could cycle your way there and have a coffee break in the town.

Thinker Cofe&bar in Shanghai
📍 Thames town, Shonjiang district, Shanghai. It’s in a beauty European town.
🍔 It’s an English restaurant full of Western dishes.
🚖 It’s at least an hour ride from downtown.
📝 The menu is really full of yummy dishes but the price is high.
💴 For a cup of chocolate and Ice cream I paid around 100 RMB, around 50 RMB for soup and around 70 RMB for the salad.
I used to run away from my busy life when I was living in Shanghai and this place was one of the favorite places I loved to chill and be in my thoughts.

A European town in Shanghai
This beautiful town is located in Shonjiang district of Shanghai. It’s quite far from downtown so you better to plan a whole day trip or stay and enjoy a few days.
I traveled with my friends and we enjoyed every moment. We booked a room around the town and it wasn’t expensive. The place doesn’t have entrance fee. So no need to worry about it.
It’s a unique place to travel to if you feel a bit tired of Asian style. They also have an amazing Italian restaurant and English coffee. You will love every detail about this town.

Thames Town- Songjiang - Shanghai
This beautiful town is located in Songjiang district in Shanghai and it is named after the river Thames. it is an imitation of English market town style - red telephone boxes, Victorian terraces, cobbled streets, corner shops and a church all can be found here.
I must admit that it is a very beautiful place to go but don’t be surprised by the sheer number of photographers all over the town. 👰🏻♀️🤵🏻♂️📸
unfortunately due to low number of residents most of the shops and restaurants are not working, but on the other hand it is good if you want to walk in quiet environment enjoying coffee and the beauty of the town.

Thames Town
It’s an escape route from the usual buildings and surroundings in China…A definite must visit when in
Songjiang. It’s perfect for an afternoon walk to explore.
We also found an amazing hidden spot to have some drinks…It’s called Thinker and the food was amazing, mainly western food with high tea also available. The exterior of the restaurant is beautiful with books and church like pictures inside. I loved it!
Palipali
Located in the town of Thames in Songjiang District, Shanghai, it is a residential area. Due to its unique scenery, it attracts many tourists to visit or take photos. It gradually forms a well-known scenic spot. There are many studios for wedding dresses in the scenic area. The buildings are all imitated. British town style, European style streets, churches, moody bookstores, various cafes, bars and restaurants, everything is fine except for the traffic is not too convenient.
After entering the community, I found that the road names here are all British names, including the design of the street signs is also classical British style, very special. The community is very large and can be driven in. There is a parking lot in the community.
White fence, inside is an English country house with a small yard. I don't know who the statue is, but there are many similar statues in European cities.
The iron bridge on the river is a good place to take pictures. Many new people who make wedding dresses are framing the river. Walking on the streets in the scenic area is very European. Today is the weekend and there are more tourists.
At least a dozen pairs of new couples who took wedding dresses. Stroll through the stone-paved streets with spires on both sides.
After the crowd passed, the street was restored to tranquility. There are many cafes on the side of the road. When you are tired, you can sit down and have a drink.
There is no fixed tour route here, you can wander around as you like, and you can't go anywhere, it's landscape.
River2014.
Located in the core area of Songjiang New Town, Thames Town covers an area of about one square kilometer. From the overall layout to one brick and one tile, the original European style is reflected. Each street has different appearances. There are more than 400 acres of lake landscape and beautiful marina, and more importantly, it is a free tour and no tickets are required.
When I walked into the Thames town, the romantic European atmosphere came to me. I just traveled to Europe for a while a few months ago. I don't think that in Shanghai, you don't have to go abroad, you can enjoy the pure European style.
Although it is not a special tourist attraction, it is really suitable for weekends and friends to come and hang out. Many scenes on the street are believed to be the "favorites" of the young artists.
Thames Town has become the best location in Shanghai for many photography studios because of its beautiful environment.
SHUN.
Thames Town locates in Songjiang, Shanghai. The town is full of British atmosphere, and the building is very characteristic. Now it has become a wedding base with a church, a small lake, and a small train to take you to the town. The small bookstore in the city is known as the most beautiful bookstore in Shanghai. It regards as a benchmark for the transformation of Chinese physical bookstores. The innovative ideas dare to break through the conventions. It has the fundamental reasons for the popularity of many readers and success in the market. Walking into the bookstore, you can see the books under the glass floor and the ceiling in an orderly manner. If you continue to step forward, you will find that there are books behind the stairs leading to the second floor. On the second floor, there are sky-filled ceilings, and like other bookstores, coffee placed in line with the trend Address: 900 Lane Sanxin North Road, Songjiang District Transportation: Subway Line 9 [Songjiang University City Station]. Thames Town | The most European-style town in Shanghai.
There is a European town in Shanghai, known as the "Europaria" of Shanghai. This is Thames Town‼️
If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, you might as well come here. There are typical European-style buildings🏰, and you can take photos as if you were abroad. When the church bells ring, it seems that you can hear the sound of heaven.
Walking on the road, it feels like time⌛️ has slowed down. There are various shops on the roadside, you can go shopping, and you may have unexpected gains‼️
Of course, you can also find a coffee shop☕, order a cup of coffee, and spend a leisurely afternoon here. After nightfall, the lights come on, and the whole town is lit up, like a fairy tale world, breathtakingly beautiful🎆

Thames Town: A romantic journey in the style of England!
🏰 Wow! The first time I stepped into Thames Town, I felt like I had been transported to the romantic streets of England! 💫 The architectural style here is unique, with colorful facades, pointed roofs, and exquisite sculptures and decorations. It's simply overwhelming! 😍
📸 I was first attracted to the center of the town - the magnificent church. Standing in front of the church, I felt a sense of sacredness and solemnity. The exterior of the church is super photogenic, and it looks beautiful no matter how you shoot it, whether it's sunny or cloudy! 📷
📚 Walking along the stone road, I came to Zhongshuge. This is really a paradise for book lovers! 📖 As soon as I opened the door, I was greeted by the strong smell of books. The dazzling array of books on the shelves made my eyes spin. I picked a novel I liked, sat in the reading area by the window, and enjoyed a quiet reading time. 💕
🍽️ There are also many delicious foods in the town waiting for me to explore! I tried a Japanese restaurant, and the fresh sushi and hot ramen made me feast. 🍣🍜 If you like Western food, there are also exquisite burgers and fries for you to taste. 🍔 Of course, there are also cafes and bars to satisfy your pursuit of petty bourgeoisie. ☕🍷
🎈 In addition to food and bookstores, the town also has various art exhibitions and activities. I once participated in a fashion carnival and saw many creative fashion works. 👗🎨 The town also often holds activities such as the Cathedral Sunday Mass, which gives people a strong cultural atmosphere.
🚗 In terms of transportation, I chose to take the subway and bus. Although it is a bit far from the city, the scenery along the way also makes people feel happy. Of course, if you can, it would be more convenient to drive by yourself! 🚘
💡 Warm reminder: Remember to plan your transportation route in advance and leave enough time to avoid missing your favorite itinerary. At the same time, summer is coming, remember to apply sunscreen and bring sun protection products such as sun hats! ☀️
🌟 In general, Thames Town is a place full of romance and literary atmosphere. Whether it is shooting wedding photos, holding activities or daily play, it is an excellent choice! If you also want to experience the style of England, you might as well take a trip to Thames Town! 💖

Cangcheng Old Street—Yunjian Granary—Thames Town—Guangfulin Site
-
【Travel and Tour Guide】
Cangcheng Old Street
The district resembles Huizhou-style architecture, with the Xilin Zen Temple nearby. Its yellow walls are very eye-catching and photogenic. Be sure to go inside to light some incense and then enjoy a bowl of vegetarian noodles. Yunjian Granary
Transformed from a grain warehouse of the 90s, it retains its red brick walls and is filled with various creative graffiti, exuding a strong artistic vibe! Notable photogenic spots include the Wing Wall, a giant dragon head, and an astronaut, plus there are food shops and cafes, making it a very suitable district for young people.
Thames Town
Without being told it's in Shanghai, many would think they've arrived in Europe. The town has many European-style buildings and streets, as well as plenty of cafes, art galleries, and galleries, making it a modern district that's great for strolling and taking photos.
Guangfulin Site Park
Attracted by the Huizhou-style architecture here, the first stop is the Jixian Garden, where the reflection of the green bricks and white walls resembles an ink painting. In addition, there's an underwater museum and the Tang-style Zhiye Zen Temple, both worth visiting. The Duoyun Academy and the One-Foot Garden Cafe are just perfect for artistic youths.

Where to go in Shanghai! Thames Town
Where to go in Shanghai! I went to Thames Town this spring and the experience was really good.
An afternoon is enough to play here!!!
Take the subway line 9 to Songjiang University Town station and you can transfer to the tram.
The tram fare is two yuan and passes through the University Town.
It is recommended to have lunch at Wenhui Road in the University Town before going there!!! The University Town is cheap and delicious!!!
After getting off at Thames Town, you can follow the crowd to the entrance without worrying about getting lost!!
The scenery is really beautiful, just like a European oil painting. You must take photos and check in at the cathedral!!!
If you come in spring, there are cherry blossoms here.
There are a lot of people taking pictures here, and when the weather is good, you can take a good picture.
There are many irregular activities in the whole scenic spot. When I went there, I saw people in mascot costumes walking around with a group of children behind them. It was like a big star going out.
I really recommend coming here~ It's a very healing afternoon. I guess the sunset there will be beautiful in summer.
1. Because I didn't eat there, I don't know much about the food~ But I highly recommend getting off the tram at Wenhui Road and having a full meal in the University Town before going there. There are also many places to eat in the University Town and the prices are cheap. There are also restaurants and shops in the Thames Town scenic area, but there are more people.
2. The direction of the tram is different~ Remember to check the map to see if it is the inner circle or the outer circle. Don't take the wrong bus~ Finally, please follow me.
