There are many Poseidon temples built in honor of Poseidon. One of the most famous ones is located in Cape Sounion, southeast of Athens and at the southern tip of the Attica Peninsula, about 70 kilometers from Athens. The temple stands on a cliff about 65 meters high, which is a good place to enjoy the Aegean Sea and sunset. Cape Sounio is surrounded by the sea on three sides, with the Aegean Sea on the left, the Mediterranean Sea in front, and the Ionian Sea on the right. The Athenians believed that places with better views were suitable for building temples to worship gods. The Temple of Poseidon was built between 444 and 440 BC to protect sailors and pray for good weather, and was later destroyed by the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius in 399 BC. Climb up the hillside on the west side of the Cape Sounion parking lot, and you can see the charming style of this temple: Like other Greek temples, the Temple of Poseidon is rectangular, about 80 meters long and 60 meters wide, supported by columns on all four sides. There were originally 34 marble columns, but only 13 have been preserved. The stone columns are about 6 meters high and adopt the Doric style. The capital is an inverted cone, similar to the Parthenon. The relief decorations on the stone columns depict the scenes of the battle of the gods. Currently, some of the original reliefs are collected by the Acropolis Museum in Athens. When the poet Byron visited Greece in the 19th century, he engraved his name on a column of the Temple of Poseidon. The location, building materials and design of the Temple of Poseidon made it very conspicuous from the sea and visible to the naked eye from a long distance. This provided great help to ancient ships. Sailors returning home could also use it to identify the direction. The sunset view here is equally not to be missed as the Temple of Poseidon. Looking down, you can see the azure Aegean Sea, looking up, you can see the gorgeous sunset glow, and in the distance, you can see the dotted ships. It is a beautiful sight.

Sunset at the Temple of Poseidon and Cape Sounion

The last and highlight of my trip to Greece! Cape Sounion where the Temple of Poseidon is located I rarely drove in Athens, but this place took about 2 hours by bus from downtown Athens! But it was definitely worth it It was really, really windy because it was a winter beach, but it felt strange sitting here and watching the sun set and seeing the temple change colorsㅋㅋㅋ It was the end of January, but it felt like the new year had finally arrived After the sun went down, the sky was filled with stars, so I remember looking up for a long time. It was the first time in my life that I saw that many stars! The temple

The temple of Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea, dominates the southernmost tip of Attica, where the horizon meets the Aegean Sea. Perched on the craggy rocks of Cape Sounio, the temple is enveloped in myth and historic facts dated from antiquity until the present times. Between myth and history There are stories about the ship of King Menelaus who stopped briefly at Sounio on his way back from Troy; or about the unfortunate King Aegeus who drowned himself on that spot and the Aegean Sea got named after him; or about the people who built a temple using local marble to honour the god of the sea and safeguard the profits from the neighbouring Lavrio mines. The unknown architect is probably the same one who built Theseion in the Ancient Agora of Athens. He decorated the temple with sculptures made of Parian marble (i.e. from Paros Island), which depicted the labours of Theseus as well as battles with Centaurs and Giants (Gigantes). The remaining sculptures are showcased in the Lavrio Museum whereas the impressive kouroi [male youths] that once stood in the temple yard are now on display in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Notice the Doric columns, count their flutes and you will see that they are less in number than those on other temples of the same period (mid 5th c. BC). This feature is also found in other seaside ancient temples, for instance in the Temple of Aphaea in Aegina etc. Make the most of your trip by indulging in a refreshing swim in the small beach by the foot of the temple of Poseidon or in any one of the neighbouring beaches in Legrena or Lavrio! Treat yourselves to some fresh fish and seafood in the local tavernas. Drink in the lovely sunset view next to your better half – in one of Attica’s best locations – having the ancient temple as a backdrop and facing the deep blue sea! Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon | Greece's most beautiful viewing platform, history and sunsets The Temple of Poseidon dates back to the 5th century BC and has stood on Cape Sounion for over 2,500 years. It is a spiritual center of Greece and a great place to watch the most spectacular sunset in Greece. The Temple of Poseidon stands on the cliff top of Cape Sounion and is the focal point of the skyline. Built in the 5th century BC, it was one of the most important religious sites in ancient Greece and a beacon for returning to Athens. The Temple of Poseidon was built in 444 BC and completed in 440 BC. It was built during the reign of the Athenian politician Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens. The building is nearly 60 meters (200 feet) above sea level and is stunningly beautiful. It was built on the ruins of an earlier temple dating back to the Archaic period. Only part of the original columns remain today, but if intact, it would be very similar to the Hephaestus Temple below the Acropolis in Athens, which is contemporary and well-preserved, and may have been designed by the same architect. Although now lost, a huge bronze statue of Poseidon, possibly six meters, or twenty feet high, once stood in the Temple of Sounion. Like all Greek temples, the Temple of Poseidon is rectangular in shape and has colonnades on all four sides. There were originally 36 columns, 15 of which still stand today.

Day 24 of road trip. Took a 1.5 hour drive to the Temple of Poseidon. The drive along the way was along a coastline which has excellent views of the sea and mountains. There are also several stops along the way built for cars to stop over for the paranomic view. Ticket is 5 euro per person and we were told it was half price (perhaps due to rainy day). The temple was built on a cliff side so the wind is super strong do hold on to your caps / wigs 😂. Definitely worth a visit !

Amazing experience! I booked an excursion to visit the Temple Of Poseidon at sunset! I was blown away by how magical watching the sunset was right from the temple! There are quite long queues to get your ticket to enter but once you do there is lots of space for people to take their photographs with the sunset backdrop! Last entry in spring is 7:15pm so ensure that you have your tickets at the ready before the but off time so that you don’t miss out! There is a bar/restaurant and also a souvenir shop at the entrance to the temple. I would 100% recommend visiting this attraction! Temple of Poseidon, Greece 🇬🇷

This was easily one of the best places I went to when I was in Greece and has been a personal favorite of mine on my international travels in general. The wide open spaces and clean air coupled with the serenity of nature and sounds of the water with boats passing by ever so often made for a relaxing day here. It is easily reachable by bus and often tourist groups travel here. Be sure to bring snacks and other related foods or liquids so that you won’t have to pay extra at the nearby shop. Seeing the architecture was fascinating and luckily they had security ropes and barriers set up too so that people would not be tempted to walk too close to the edges and fall off. If you happen to be in Athens Greece, take a quick day trip here. You won’t regret it. #greece #athens #temple #🇬🇷 #europe #travel
