Chanfu Temple is the largest temple complex in Beihai, originally the Taishu Hall of the Ming Dynasty, a summer retreat for the royal family. After the death of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, it was used for memorial services, and Emperor Qianlong, honoring his mother's wishes, ordered it to be converted into a Lama Temple and bestowed the name Chanfu Temple, with regulations modeled after the Longxing Temple in Zhengding, Hebei.
