[2025 Tuki Tuki Attraction] Travel Guide for Te Mata Peak (Updated Apr)

Te Mata Peak is one of the best hikes I have done in New Zealand! Located in Hawkes Bay, Te Mata is filled with amazing hillscapes and limestone valleys. The hike through Te Mata provides spectacular views of the neighbouring mountain ranges and 360degrees views of Hawke’s Bay. If you are lucky to come on a clear day, you can even see Mount Ruapehu in the distance! Along the track, don’t miss out on the Redwoods Forest, a 223 grove of California redwoods. The walking circuits in the forest are signposted but in the late evening when it was dark, it is easy to miss out on the signpost and get lost. Located at Hawkes Bay, Te Mata Peak is a popular hiking area in the region. Not just for hikers, this place is also really popular for mountain bikers as well, where you will see them zoom past you as you are catching your next breathe walking up the hills :D There are many hikes available in this area, with different levels of difficulty. We took the longer 2 hour route which brought us to many beautiful viewpoints as seen in the pictures. The hikes are not exactly difficult to do, but it does take some effort to complete it, so make sure you bring lots of water with you, and maybe even pack a sandwich just in case you need some additional energy. Towards the end of the route, there is also a popular “Redwoods Forest”. For this, I would highly recommend to check the time before stepping into the forest. When I entered the forest, it was actually near sunset and because the place wasn’t exactly properly signed, the whole forest turned dark rather quickly and i was almost trapped inside not knowing where is the exit, but luckily there were still other locals in there which allowed me to follow them out of the forest. With that said, the forest is really beautiful so definitely check it out!
