Experience the thrill of a husky sled ride in Finland's Arctic Circle
A trip to Finland in winter is not complete without trying the outdoor sport of dog sledding. In Lapland, you can experience the fun of Finland's most traditional winter sport - dog sledding! You can also learn about the life habits and daily life of huskies, sit in a traditional Sami tent by the fire, enjoy some traditional Sami snacks, and drink a cup of fruit tea! All of this is in Finnish Lapland!
👍Highly recommended:
The most common sled dogs in Finland are Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, and most of them are now crossbreeds of the two. These sled dogs are extremely gentle, especially friendly to people, and even strangers will be affectionate with you. They are even more enthusiastic about their owners, like children eager to be pampered.
Here, a dog sled is a sled with two people, pulled by five sled dogs. Some are pulled by seven sled dogs! Dog sledding is a team sport, and these dogs need to be specially trained for 1-2 years, or even 3-5 years, to be qualified!
I was so excited to ride a dog sled for the first time, and finally, we set off!
I didn't expect the dogs to run so fast, the sled was flying through the forest, and the snowflakes splashed on my face and lens, which is the fun of snow. My eyelashes were instantly covered with small ice crystals 😂
Dog sledding is available from December to April every year, and during this time, Lapland is usually covered with thick snow. In other months, the owners will take the dogs for training in suitable temperatures, and in the hottest days of summer, the thick-coated sled dogs are not suitable for exercise, so the owners will take them camping and vacationing.
📝Tips:
1️⃣Before departure, a professional coach will help us change into professional cold-proof clothing, gloves, and helmets!
2️⃣The coach will patiently explain how to ride the sled, how to brake, and the precautions for changing rides, the safety distance during the ride, and how to better control the speed on different sections of the road!
3️⃣Driving a sled is also a skill, and the dogs need to work and rest, so they will be slowed down or stopped to rest in the middle of the ride. Sled dogs are naturally active, curious, and exploratory, and running is their nature.
4️⃣The best distance for husky sledding is 10 km, which is a great experience. After a pleasant husky forest trip, you can enjoy a warm cup of fruit tea and listen to stories about huskies, and have the opportunity to get close to the little huskies.
