The Majestic Upper Falls are a must see stop in Michigan's U.P.
Upper Falls, Tahquamenon Falls, MI, USA
The largest waterfalls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are a must-see, especially during the fall when the leaves are changing color. We visited as part of a fall color tour, and the falls were absolutely stunning. Easily accessible via paved paths, the 200-foot-wide Upper Falls is one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The river’s unique amber hue comes from tannins leached from the cedar, spruce, and hemlock trees in the surrounding swamps, while the soft water churned by the falls creates a distinctive foam. This has earned the falls the nickname “Root Beer Falls” due to its frothy white foam and deep brown water, which resembles the creamy froth atop root beer. The color is natural and harmless. To experience the falls up close, you’ll only need to descend 94 steps for a breathtaking view but if you’d rather skip the stairs, there are plenty of other vantage points to enjoy the stunning scenery without the climb. It’s truly a must-see in person to fully appreciate the experience—and if you’re traveling through the U.P. don't miss this spot!
