As you wander through the narrow streets of Eastern Kyoto, a tall pagoda appears with breathtaking beauty. To-ji Temple is a UNESCO world heritage site built in 794, as one of two original guardian temples of the Imperial city of Heiankyo. To-ji literally means ‘East temple’.
🚇 Take the metro to Kyoto station. Leave through the Hachijo exit and walk 15 minutes to To-ji temple.
🎫 A ticket is required for entry to the temple. Tickets cost 500 yen for one adult.
🌸 It is recommended to visit To-ji temple during the spring, just in time to see the cherry blossom trees in full bloom. There are many around the temple grounds and nearby streets, making this the perfect time for beautiful photos.

Sakura and the flea market at the famous temple
A walk through the narrow streets to the To-ji Temple allows you to imagine yourself as a resident of ancient Kyoto. The graceful outlines of the famous five—level pagoda rise above the roofs of the other buildings - the view is simply amazing.
How to get there
To-ji can be reached on foot or by train from Kyoto.
It takes a 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station, but you can also take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line train to Toji Station. From there, it's a five-minute walk to the temple.
The symbol of Kyoto
One has only to see the local panorama, and it becomes clear why To-ji has become a symbol of Kyoto. The height of the pagoda is 55 meters — it is the tallest wooden building in Japan.
The temple was built in 796. The pagoda had to be reconstructed more than once. The current building was erected in 1644. There are 21 Buddhist statues on display in the Kodo Hall in the very center of the temple grounds — these statues are among the oldest in Japan.
Monthly Flea Market
A huge flea market takes place on the 21st of every month in To-ji. There are more than 1,000 stalls with food, antiques, handmade goods and many others on the territory of the temple. The flea market starts early, at five o'clock in the morning, and closes at about four o'clock in the afternoon.
Sprinkled with sakura and lights
To-ji is especially popular in spring because it is considered one of the best places to admire sakura in the area. During the flowering season, illumination is lit on the temple grounds. Cherry blossoms are especially beautiful against the background of the night sky.

Kyoto's Toji Temple is also one of the famous spots for cherry blossom viewing
This time, I'll share a bit about Toji Temple, a World Heritage Site in Kyoto.
Toji Temple is the head temple of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. It was built during the period when the capital was moved to Heian-kyo. Later, Emperor Saga entrusted Toji Temple to Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, who had returned from studying Esoteric Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty. Kukai established the central mandala, lecture hall, and five-storied pagoda here. However, what we see now has been restored and rebuilt over time, as many buildings were damaged by natural disasters and human calamities.
Today, Japanese people still believe that Master Kukai's spirit is in Mount Koya, but his heart remains in Toji Temple. Therefore, every morning, many Esoteric Buddhism followers come to the temple's Miedo Hall to worship.
In early spring, under the five-storied pagoda and beside the treasure hall, several early cherry trees and plum blossoms are blooming beautifully, making it a great spot for photography enthusiasts to enjoy the flowers. Additionally, from March 16th to April 14th, there is a night cherry blossom illumination event.

Big, serene, peaceful and beautiful
This temple stands out due to its tall five storey pagoda that you can see in the distance. However, there's more to see with two halls housing large altars whereupon sit grand Buddhist statues that are quite a spectacle in themselves. Unfortunately, it's not so convenient to sit to admire or meditate, nor can you take photos at the altars, so you tend to go inside the two halls relatively briefly.
Staff are friendly too. Enjoyed the visit very much

Visiting Toji Temple At Night
#fallishere
I would strongly suggest to visit at least 1 of the famous temples in Kyoto at night because they are just as beautiful as in the day but with less to no crowd to fight taking pictures with you. That's what I did for Toji temple, we visited it at night and we can't help but fall in love with it. Toji temple is a world heritage site and you could see the famous 5 storey high Pagoda building stand tall with the night lights shinning at it. The whole place looks impressive and it was still worth the trip at night. The pictures taken by me speak for itself.

To-ji: Kyoto's Heritage Gem

Location:
1 Kujocho, Minami Ward, Kyoto, 601-8473, Japan
To-ji(東寺) located in Kyoto, Japan, is a historic Buddhist temple with roots dating back to the 8th century. Established in 796, during the Heian period, by Emperor Kanmu, To-ji originally served as a guardian temple for the capital. The main pagoda, standing at 54.8 meters, is the tallest wooden tower in Japan and a designated national treasure. Originally part of a more extensive complex, To-ji played a crucial role in the propagation of Shingon Buddhism, introduced by Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Over the centuries, the temple complex has undergone several reconstructions due to fires and other natural disasters. Today, To-ji remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors with its rich cultural and religious significance, exquisite architectural structures, and the vibrant atmosphere of its surroundings.

Toji Temple, literally "East Temple", was founded at the beginning of the Heian Period just after the capital was moved to Kyoto in the late 700s. The large temple, together with its now defunct sister temple Saiji ("West Temple"), flanked the south entrance to the city and served as the capital's guardian temples. Toji Temple is one of Kyoto's many UNESCO world heritage sites. #wintergetaway

Located in the southwest of Kyoto Station in Japan, the "East Temple", also known as the Wang Huguo Temple, was built in 796 AD and was built as a guardian temple in Kyoto. It is also one of the 17 world cultural heritage sites in Kyoto. Although the East Temple is not as famous as the Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, it is the only existing intact Beijing-style building in Kyoto. The five-storied pagoda in the temple is a Japanese national treasure-level cultural relic.
The temple is full of a sense of history. There are fewer tourists in Lidong Temple on weekdays, but on the 21st of every month, there will be crowds, because this day is the Hongfa market in Dongsi. In addition to the incense, there are more than a thousand booths in the temple. Like the flea market, there are antique artifacts, old objects, handicrafts, daily necessities, snacks, etc., especially with fireworks.
Dong Temple contains many treasures of national treasures. It is also a cherry blossom viewing place in Kyoto. In the spring, the five-storied pagoda and the eight-sakura in the East Temple complement each other; the lotus pond in the summer pond is full of Zen fun; the autumn is the resort to enjoy maple leaves and ginkgo. Even if your trip in Kyoto is not on the 21st, it is especially worth visiting.

Japan's tallest wooden tower: Toji
Every time you take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka, you will know that Kyoto is here when you see the five-storied tower of Toji Temple.
The five-storied pagoda of the Jidong Temple seems to be a symbol. The five-storied pagoda with a height of about 55 meters is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. This time, I also made an appointment for the earliest visit to Dongji. In the special visits before the opening, I can admire the East Temple and the especially open five-storied pagoda.
For this visit, I adjusted the alarm clock at 4 o'clock, and I was awakened by the drizzle as soon as I went out. Because it was too early, it was a very rare experience to take a taxi with friends. 5
Mio..
From the station that came out of the East Temple, the snacks were small and cute. I don't know if I am hungry. I think it is the best cake I have ever eaten in Kyoto. The taste is light, not faint; it conveys the true taste of the ingredients, is not covered by the condiments, and can be eaten for a long time. Good food, no matter what, and the ingredients are expensive.
OO-OO.
Dongsi was named a world cultural heritage. Former Master of the True Words, the master of the sea, promoted the doctrine of the secret teaching. Yuyingtang used to be the residence of Master Konghai.
The five-storied pagoda in the temple, the Jintang, the lecture hall and the courtyard in between are only available during the special opening season of the Spring and Autumn Period. Jintang is enshrined with three statues of the statue, and the three-dimensional mandala is set in the lecture hall, which is regarded as a national treasure by Japan.
OO-OO.
Dong Temple, the famous teacher Wang Huguo Temple, listens to the name and knows the good water! The temple was basically built in parallel with the construction of Ping Anjing, and it is also a temple with a long history.
Here, the most famous is the five-storied pagoda. Don't look like it is not what it is. It can still be a symbol of Kyoto. The tower is 57m high and was rebuilt in the 17th century. It is still one of Kyoto's commanding heights and the tallest ancient pagoda in Japan. It is said that autumn is also a good place to enjoy red leaves.
