Sapporo Suwa Shrine
In 1877, Masauji Kamijima from Shinano moved to this area alone and began the work of cultivating the land. On March 12, 1882, Kamijima invited a branch shrine of the Kanpeitaisha Suwa Shrine (now Suwa Taisha), which was the main shrine of his hometown. In total, over 30 people moved from Shinano. A small shrine was built on Kamijima's residence and the shrine was founded to pray for eternal peace and governance.
*With a special donation of land from Kamijima, the owner of Togoen, an application was made to the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1897, and in April 1934, it was ranked as a village shrine and designated as a shrine that provides sacred offerings.
When this land was incorporated into Sapporo City from Sapporo Village in the same year, the shrine building and office were built using the village's basic assets. In 1967, an application was made to promote the building to a local shrine. In 1966, the current shrine building was constructed. In 1982, a 100th anniversary celebration was held. In 1992, as part of the 110th anniversary of the shrine's establishment, the main shrine roof was replaced with copper sheets and other buildings were renovated. In 2012, the 130th anniversary of the shrine's establishment was celebrated.
Since its establishment in 1882, 130 years have passed since it was enshrined, and it has been revered by many parishioners and worshippers as the deity that protects the northeastern part of Sapporo.
In 2022, it will celebrate its 140th year since its establishment.
*Togoen...This is an area from Kita-Jujo to Jusanjo, and Higashi-1-Chome to Higashi-2-Chome, where Mr. Ueshima planted 35,000 irises and other flowers to create a shrine that was truly fantastical and decorated with soap bubbles 🫧, seasonal flowers, Japanese umbrellas, and many other ideas, making it one of my fondest memories.
