The gate has been restored and the paintworks are intricate and brightly colored. When visiting or driving past at night time the gate will be lit up with floodlights even very late. Is it worth adding this to your itinerary, probably not, but will you likely pass here anyway, sure. So take a few minutes out of your touring to visit the historical site, take a few pictures and continue on to the main spots in Seoul!

My 5.5-kilometer walk to Sungnyemun took about 1 hour and 20 minutes, a pleasant stroll under clear skies. Along the way, I encountered markers for Namji Pond, an ancient pond built to protect Gyeongbokgung Palace from fire, and the Joseon Tongsinsa Road, commemorating the diplomatic missions to Japan from 1607 to 1811. These markers offered a fascinating glimpse into the gate's historical surroundings. Upon arrival, I found Sungnyemun, officially meaning "exalting civility," though commonly known as "Namdaemun" (South Gate). I came specifically to check on its well-being after the devastating 2008 fire that destroyed much of the structure. The five-year, 24.5 billion won restoration highlights the importance of preserving such a vital national treasure, a lesson learned from past neglect. Completed in 1398, Sungnyemun served as a city gate and a welcoming point for foreign envoys. However, its traditional functions diminished over time, particularly with the introduction of trams in 1899 and subsequent urban development that isolated it. The gate also suffered damage during the Korean War. #SpringTravel I ate 'Boset' at Daebojeong near Sungnyemun. The combination of raw beef and gimbukak was quite salty, but it was fresh and delicious. The main dish, charcoal-grilled beef, came with three parts: sirloin, tenderloin, and brisket. It was soft and juicy, and they grilled it for me, so I was able to eat comfortably. For my meal, I could choose between seaweed soup and cold noodles. The bibim cold noodles were just the right amount of salty and delicious, so they were good for ending the meal.

If you take the subway, I think Exit 9 of City Hall Station on Line 2 is the closest. Two of us entered the restaurant around 10:30 and were shown in right away. We shared one serving of kalguksu and one chijimi and were just full. I had worried about whether I would be able to finish the huge bowl-like bowl of kalguksu, so I had ruled it out as a place to go several times while visiting Korea, but by sharing one serving of kalguksu with two people, I was able to finish it all in one go, with its delicious shellfish broth. #0yentravelFebruary2025 In the morning, we took a bus up to Namsan Tower, enjoyed the beautiful view overlooking Seoul, and then took a leisurely walk down the autumn-covered Namsan mountain. After that, we went to the noodle street in Namdaemun Market. I had thought about taking a look at all the shops, but after passing through the plastic?, at the first shop, someone called out to me in Japanese, "Wife, wife, please come over here!" I thought, "What, you mean my wife?" and we had noodle soup there and then. Korea is so fun! The noodle soup was also really delicious! After that, we walked along Seoullo 7017 to Seoul Station. We had a great time!
