Burn candles, play with fire, float krathong, Sukhothai
Loi Krathong 2022 this year falls on November 8, 2022.
If we want the best of Indy Trip, we have to find a way to visit the biggest and most magnificent event. It will be the province that organizes the Loi Krathong festival beautifully and grandly every year. One of them has to be Sukhothai for sure.
This year, Sukhothai Province has organized the Candle Festival 2022 and will be held from October 29 to November 8, 2022 at Wat Chana Songkhram, Sukhothai Historical Park for 11 full days. Follow us to visit the Sukhothai Loi Krathong Festival and you will get to know the charm of Sukhothai's inherited traditions!
When it comes to the Loi Krathong Festival on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 12th month of every year, each province comes out to organize a grand celebration with different identities in each culture. One of them is Sukhothai, which organizes the Loi Krathong Festival, Candle Festival, Sukhothai Province at Sukhothai Historical Park every year. Every year we will see the Loi Krathong ceremony. Fireworks, lanterns, and sound and light shows that show the civilization of the world heritage city, etc., which is one of the provinces that we intend to visit.
There is no clear evidence of when the Loi Krathong tradition began. We only know that it is an ancient Indian tradition that Thailand has adopted and has been practiced for a long time since the Sukhothai period. During the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng, this Loi Krathong tradition was called the Jong Prien ceremony or the Loi Pradeep ceremony. In the past, the Loi Krathong ceremony was the floating of lanterns, held to worship the three gods: Phra Isuan, Phra Narai, and Phra Phrom. Later, Buddhism was introduced, so lanterns were raised to worship the relics of the Lord Buddha and lanterns were floated to worship the footprints of the Lord Buddha. Then, Nang Noppamas or Thao Sri Chulalak was the first person to invent the krathong. There is evidence from the first stone inscription that mentions the candle-lighting and fire-playing festival as the biggest entertainment event in Sukhothai. Therefore, it is believed that this event is likely the Loi Krathong festival, in which Thai people in the past used lotus flowers as krathongs.
Until the reign of King Rama II, the use of lotus flowers was changed to banana trees because lotus flowers were rare and few. However, using banana trees instead did not look beautiful, so folded banana leaves were used instead. It has been passed down to the present.
How was it? After learning the brief history, we had no way of missing out, so we set off on a trip and arrived at the event at 2 p.m. because we were afraid of traffic jams. We also went for a walk around the event, which was very big. We actually didn't walk around the whole place. We saw a very beautiful parade. Nang Noppamas 2020 was also very beautiful. There were many parades in the parade, organized in 9 districts. When evening fell, we had to line up to wait for the light and sound show. There were many events to see all the time, which was not disappointing at all. The light and sound show was very beautiful. I must say that you must see it at least once. After that, we had dinner, rested, and floated the krathongs and waited to see the fireworks at midnight. It was not disappointing at all. It was worth the wait. The fireworks were very beautiful. I took some impressive pictures. I don't want to say that it was really beautiful, everyone. If possible, my destination that I would like to visit at least once is the Sukhothai Loi Krathong Festival.
