#St. Stephen's Basilica Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Incredible Church
One of the Budapest must visits. Come early as it's very busy here. I suggest getting the rooftop combo package.
A striking basilica from outside, it's a great photo opportunity. Inside is mind blowing. Such beautiful and reverence. A true blessing to the almighty creator.
There are roped off spots for quiet prayer and reflection. Please take your hat off indoors. A group of Chinese tourists unfortunately showed a lack of respect by refusing to do so.
The treasure room is interesting with luxurious and historical relics from previous bishops.
The rooftop had great views on rainy or sunny days. It's worth the extra effort. You can take the lazy elevator or take the stairs like I did.
Combined ticket is 3500HUF or free for teachers

St. Stephen's Basilica
St. Stephen's Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary, whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Since the renaming of the primatial see, it has been the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary. The site of today's basilica was a theater in the 18th century. This theater, named Hetz-Theater, was a place where animal fights were hosted. One of the wealthy citizens (János Zitterbarth) of the newly formed district built a temporary church there. In the late 1810s, about a thousand people formed the Lipótváros Parish. Then they began the fundraising and the believers started to make plans for the future church. #urbanexplorer

When you travel Europe you get used to seeing basilicas and cathedrals that are all the same. This is by far one of my favorite. It is overwhelmingly beautiful and free to enter.

#ststephen’s Basilica is the largest $church in #budapest and can hold up to 8,500 people.
It took more than 50 years to build the Basilica. Building commenced in 1851, and the inauguration ceremony took place in 1906.
The dome is 96 meters high, the exact same height as the Budapest Parliament Building. In fact current building regulations stipulate that no other structure in Budapest can be taller than 96 meters. Having the same height as the Parliament also symbolizes the balance between church and state in #Hungary.

The city obelisk, St. Istvan Cathedral
Diak Square has a small obelisk, behind the famous St. Stephen's Cathedral, and for the entire city of Budapest, with Congress The St. Stephen's Church at the same height of the building is also like an obelisk, forming the most eye-catching part of the city skyline.
This is the only church we have in Budapest, so it looks extraordinarily serious. Although the churches in Europe seem to be similar, even the kind of glory is familiar, such as domes, murals, altars, and the organ behind them. But each church has its own soul. The biggest attraction of the church is not only the magnificent interior of the Neo-Renaissance style, but the right hand remains of the King of St. Estevan in the church.
1038 King St. Estevan died. His relatives took the right hand that symbolized the supremacy of the kingship and were preserved by the Hungarians as holy objects. The right hand of the Saint was stolen several times and recovered from Vienna after World War II. The saints are now stored in a secret room in the church of Istvan, for worshippers and tourists. The offering of the sacred hand adds a mysterious color to the church, and it is also a powerful appeal that attracts believers and curious visitors. The
church is free to enter, there is a donation box at the entrance, the person can voluntarily donate 200 HUF; the elevator can reach the top of the church tower (additional 500 HUF), and 360 degrees from a height overlooking Budapest However, the angles of the photos taken by the predecessors are average, and we have not gone up.

Go to Budapest to experience the romantic Christmas atmosphere
Budapest's Christmas atmosphere is already very strong, and various markets have started (11/17-1/1).
Route: St. Istvan Cathedral (the best Christmas market in Europe from 20-22) - Budapest Eye Ferris Wheel - Vörösmarty Square (there is a free mini train, I also took it) - Fashion Street, you can walk back to Vörösmarty Square for dinner at Cyrano, it opens at 18:00, the service is good and the taste is also good.
You can watch the light show at the church in the evening, and you can check in at Gerbeaud Kávéház in Vörösmarty Square, which was established in the 19th century and is a favorite cafe of Princess Sisi.
The Christmas market is very lively, but the prices are not cheap, just join in the fun, don't consume blindly.
There is a free public toilet in Mati Square, right where the mini train is. Bring your own paper, it's very small inside. Everyone should bring some change when going out, try to use the toilet in the hotel before going out, after all, most of the toilets in Budapest require consumption to use (or directly charge).
Budapest Christmas Market
Budapest's Christmas Market is a festive extravaganza, captivating visitors with its enchanting atmosphere and cultural charm. Set against the backdrop of the majestic St. Stephen's Basilica, the market transforms the heart of the city into a winter wonderland. Traditional wooden stalls adorned with twinkling lights offer a rich array of Hungarian handicrafts, seasonal decorations, and savory delights like chimney cake and mulled wine. Carolers and live music create a joyful ambiance, while an ice rink adds a touch of winter fun. The market's unique blend of history, tradition, and holiday spirit makes it a must-visit destination, captivating locals and tourists alike.

The view from the panoramic terrace is definitely worth the price of admission! You can see the entire city skyline from atop the basilica.
The building itself has some beautiful architecture, finely detailed with statues of many saints and religious figures.
If you are a fan of architecture, history, or religion, it's a must-see.
Nice Panoramic View

Budapest Basilica
Must visit when headed to Budapest. A lot of great restaurants around. It is also near the shopping areas and other key points in the city centre. The view is very nice especially at night while having dinner at one of the restaurants nearby. During Christmas, there are also market around so you can try local dishes but be warned because they are a bit overpriced.
Take the M1 line to the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Ut station and walk to the St. Esteban Cathedral for free to visit, but there is a donation box at the entrance to the church, not mandatory (see a lot of people for 200 HUF). There is an additional charge of HUF 500 per person for boarding.
The day we went was just Saturday, the melodious singing of the church choir, echoing in this ancient church, empty and holy, solemn and shocking.
St. Esteban Cathedral, when Germany bombed Budapest during World War II, made a great contribution. Many important national artifacts and collectibles were put into the church, and they escaped a demise of Hungarian culture. The catastrophe of the disaster.
The legendary "St. Right Hand", which feels like a Buddhist relic, is generally enshrined in the past.
