#wintertrip Seosuseowon was originally established in 1542, when Ju Sebung (local magistrate) built a shrine in honor of the philosopher, An Hyang. The location was originally the site of a Buddhist temple, Suksusa, where An Hyang may have studied. When Yi Hwang served as the local magistrate in 1549, the academy became the first one that was officially chartered. It received farmland, servants (slaves), and most importantly, books.

Seosuseowon has two main areas including a learning area and an area dedicated to memorial services. Leading up to the Sosuseowon, there is a pine forest (nicknamed, scholar trees) with trees over 300 years old. Within the complex, there is a small museum showcasing some literature as well as a building with paintings of famous scholars. If you are interested in learning more, there is a museum located behind the seowon and across the river. In 2019, this academy and 8 other Korean Neo-Confucian academies were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
