This bowl-shaped plateau at the foot of Mt. Kameyama is one of the most famous spots in the Kansai region for Japanese silver grass. Many tourists visit in autumn when the ears of Japanese silver grass turn silvery. To easily enjoy the Soni Plateau, hike up the stepped trail to Kameyama Pass, then follow the ridge to the summit of Mt. Kameyama at an altitude of 849m and descend to the plateau. It takes about an hour to go around, but it is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes at least sneakers. The view from Kameyama Pass is wonderful. The gently sloping Soni Plateau spreads out below you with Okame Pond at the center, and behind it are mountains such as Byobuiwa, Sumizukayama, Kunimiyama, Kabutodake, and Yoroitake, which are lined up like a folding screen. If you have the time and energy, we recommend a round trip from Kameyama Pass via Nibonboso to Mt. Kuraizumi (altitude 1,037m). It takes just under two hours round trip, but you will be walking along a rocky ridge with many ups and downs, which will wear you out more than the distance. There is a local bus to get there, but you will have to walk quite a bit from the bus stop. It was a very vast place and I was able to feel nature on my skin. The parking lot was relatively large, so even beginners could park with peace of mind. I gave up on the climb halfway through, but when I saw the view from the top in videos, it was so magnificent that I regretted not climbing. Next time I visit, I will try wearing sneakers or other comfortable clothes. There are no toilets in sight, so I recommend the roadside station on the way to the plateau, which is clean and sells a variety of items.

I visited Soni Highland in Nara Prefecture. Soni Highland presents a refreshing view of a blue carpet spread across the landscape from spring to summer. In autumn, the silver and golden hues of the pampas grass under the sunlight attract many tourists every year, making it a popular spot. Additionally, halfway up Soni Highland, there is Okame Pond, where you can see rare plants. You can also enjoy the nearby Okame Hot Spring. I visited during the summer season this time, but I would love to visit again in autumn to see the pampas grass in full bloom.

Things to note about Soni Plateau, a famous spot for Japanese pampas grass ⚠️ The first time we visited, we couldn't reach the parking lot and had to retreat as the sun was setting ⤵︎ ︎ Even today, a Monday in November, we enjoyed ourselves until sunset and were about to head home, but there were still cars lined up, which was unfortunate... There are two parking lots at Soni Plateau: at the foot of the mountain (Farm Garden) and at the top of the mountain (Noguchi Parking Lot). It's probably about a 30-minute walk from the foot of the mountain. However, the Noguchi Parking Lot (800 yen), which is right next to the Japanese pampas grass, is quite strict in terms of structure and number of cars, and tends to be congested. Even at 3:00 p.m. on a weekday Monday, we still had to line up a little. If you're going out on the weekend, you should be prepared to bring lunch with you. Once you start lining up, there are very few places to make a U-turn to get to the parking lot, so there's nothing you can do... It was already congested around the Farm Garden. If it starts to get congested, it might be better to park and walk.
