A temple of monks, along with Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon and Tongdosa Temple in Yangsan, is one of the Three Jewels of Korean Buddhism.
Sambo means Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
In 2017, a portrait believed to belong to the 18th century monk Mukamdang Choi Nul, who was smuggled to Japan, was returned to Songgwangsa.
It is famous as the temple with the most treasures and monuments, such as the wooden triad Buddha statue, the Great Nirvana Sutra, the Suseonsa execution site, and the gilt-bronze yo-ryeong.
It is also the filming location for the movie Decision to Break Up directed by Park Chan-wook. There are many cypress trees around the temple and the autumn leaves are also beautiful.
Songgwangsa, founded as Gilsangsa, has Gilsangsa in Seoul and Gilsangsa in Changwon as branch temples with the same name.
During evening prayers, monks take turns beating drums.
