Socotra Island An archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, belonging to the Socotra province of Yemen. The location is about 350 kilometers south of the Arabian Peninsula, east of the Horn of Africa, where the Arabian Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. The archipelago consists of 4 islands with an area of 3,650 square kilometers, and the main island has an area of 3,635 square kilometers. The island has been isolated from the continental plate for 18 million years, and the long-term geographic isolation has produced many unique flora and fauna. A total of 825 species of plants, 90% of reptiles and 95% of snails in Socotra are unique to the island. It is considered the "Galapagos of the Indian Ocean" due to its wide variety of rare creatures. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
