São Benedict Station opened in 1916 and is located in Almeida Garrett Square in the city center. It is a railway station in the Portuguese city of Porto. The station is mainly famous for its 20,000 tile paintings showing the history of Portugal. The station takes its name from the 16th-century Benedictine monastery that once stood here, but fell into disuse at the end of the 19th century. In 1900, King Carlos I laid the foundation stone for the station. The station was designed by local architect José Marquez da Silva, but was influenced by the French Beaux-Arts school.
