My favorite border town so far.
If you don't want to work, come to Mangshi, a small town on the border of Yunnan, for a few days.
The pace here is slow, and every day feels leisurely; the scenery is charming, and you can enjoy the rich Southeast Asian style everywhere; there are many delicacies, and you can eat different things every day; the climate is pleasant, not so hot in summer, and about 20 degrees in winter.
🚙 Mangshi 2-day itinerary
Day 1: Menghuan Silver Pagoda ➡️ Menghuan Golden Pagoda ➡️ Best Food ➡️ Bodhi Street ➡️ Bodhi Temple ➡️ Dai Ancient Town Night Tour;

📷 The best photo spot is at the entrance of Mangshi Hotel, but be sure to follow traffic rules.
✅ New Factory
It feels like you are on Khao San Road in Bangkok, with a wide variety of snacks, very good to visit, and many popular check-in spots.

An ancient town full of Dai style, like a Dai palace.

A De'ang village hidden in the mountains, with a sense of seclusion.

|A charming city on the southwestern frontier in the east of the world. Mangshi|A charming city on the southwestern frontier
In the east of the world, there is a mysterious and beautiful land, which is Yunnan Province, China. On this colorful land, Mangshi is like a dazzling pearl, shining with unique light.
Not only does it have distinctive ethnic customs, but also spectacular natural scenery and a long history and culture. It is a tourist resort full of curiosity and unique charm. There are many ethnic minorities living here, such as Dai, Jingpo, Achang, De'ang, etc. They each have their own unique languages, costumes, customs and festivals, such as the Water-Sprinkling Festival of the Dai people and the Munao Zongge Festival of the Jingpo people, which are all distinctive ethnic cultural activities.
Here, you can learn more about the local food, art and culture, and feel their enthusiasm and kindness. You can climb up to Mengbana Xishuangbanna Garden, overlook the whole view of Mangshi, and taste the magic charm of nature; you can walk into Menghuan Giant Golden Pagoda, enjoy the melodious Sanskrit sound, and experience the solemnity and sanctity of Buddhist culture; you can stroll in Shubao Pagoda Park, appreciate the perfect combination of ancient banyan trees and pagodas, and appreciate the integration of history and nature;

Border Town - Mangshi, Yunnan
🌴Treasure Town Mangshi, it's really amazing🌴
In Dai language, Mangshi is called 'Menghuan', which means 'City of Dawn'✨. This place is full of exotic charm, with coconut trees 🌴 lining the streets, making you feel like you're in Southeast Asia.
📸Must-visit attractions:
👉Menghuan Golden Pagoda: It is the first hollow Buddha pagoda in Asia, entirely golden and extremely dazzling. It is a landmark building in Mangshi, and it shines even more brilliantly under the sun. Any random shot is super impressive🤩.
👉Menghuan Silver Pagoda: The pure white silver pagoda symbolizes pure love, friendship, and family affection💕. There is a sky mirror here, with many beautiful spots where you can take panoramic photos of the golden pagoda opposite. It is also an excellent place to view the night scene and sunset🌇.
👉Dai Ancient Town: Although it is an artificial attraction, it is full of Dai ethnic style when lit up at night. If you catch a Dai dance performance, it feels like a time travel moment🎇.
👉Tree-wrapped Pagoda: A very peculiar sight, a large banyan tree wrapping around a pagoda, located in the middle of an open parking lot. You can stop by if you are passing through🤗.
👉Unity Avenue: The road is lined with coconut trees, yellow taxis, and groups of electric scooters passing by, full of Southeast Asian vibes. You can even take photos of airplanes✈.
👉New Play Factory: The 'Mangshi' graffiti wall, 'We Love Mangshi So Much', and other popular photo spots are all here🎨. There is also a lively night market in the evening.
🍱Food Recommendations:
🥘Dream Dehong: Top of the local food list🥇, a classic Dai flavor restaurant. You must try the hand-grabbed rice and Paoluda😋.
🍜Bad Road Breakfast: You have to get up early to eat breakfast here. Big bowls of rice noodles with lots of beef and various self-service spices to add, the taste is absolutely amazing👍.
🥗Best Food City: Egg pancakes, Burmese chicken rice, avocado juice, various flavors of pickled chicken feet, Paoluda, and more🤩.
🦀Seven Shrimp Shop: Originally went for the 'Ruili Live Crabs', but ended up being a fan of the stir-fried beef with sour bamboo shoots. A must-try for snail noodle lovers😍.
☕Coffee: Ahe Coffee feels like being in a forest, with a Chiang Mai jungle vibe; Menshi Coffee is suitable for street photography; Meizi Coffee allows you to count airplanes in a small ruined building; Under the Tree Coffee is full of surprises and cost-effective.
🚗Transportation:
You can fly directly to Dehong Mangshi Airport or transfer from Kunming✈.
🎈Travel Tips:
Mangshi is not big, and all attractions are within the starting fare range. You can visit all in one day, but it is highly recommended to stay for two more days. Wake up naturally every day, go downstairs for a bowl of rice noodles, and then leisurely visit various attractions. When tired, find a coffee shop to sit and enjoy the slow time here😘.
From April 13 to April 15 is the Dai Water Splashing Festival, and the whole city will be very lively🎉. Also, Ruili and Tengchong, which are within a 2-hour drive from Mangshi, can be arranged for a visit together🤗.

The most comprehensive lazy guide to Mangshi, Yunnan
Mangshi, Dehong, Yunnan—If you want to check out Mangshi after visiting Tengchong, this is the guide for you. Relax and enjoy, no need to rush, focusing on leisure, food, and massages💆
👝Travel days: Two days and one night
🏨: Chengyue Hotel in Mangshi, located in the city center, with excellent environment
💆: Baiyun Hair Washing Shop: Right downstairs from the hotel, it's recommended to try both hair washing and massage, super comfortable! Very cost-effective
🌳Attractions: Golden Pagoda⚱️/Tree-wrapped Pagoda/Palm trees all over the streets🌴/Dai Ancient Town
🈯️Suggestions:
🌟Personally, I feel Mangshi doesn't have particularly special attractions, not as fun as Tengchong
🌟Very hot and sunny during the day/Transportation: You can rent electric scooters all over the streets
🌟One of the Golden or Silver Pagodas is enough, there are costume rentals for photos outside. It's recommended to take an electric car both ways, tickets are needed, walking back and forth is tiring
🥐🥐🥐Food section
1. Ruili Live Crab🦀: Spicy flavor/Green pepper frog🐸
2. 🍡Mangshi Xiuhua Jianshui Chrysanthemum Cross-bridge Rice Noodles: Beef dipping sauce
3. 🍝Lanlu Breakfast: Beef rice noodles
4. 🍜Lin's Yuanzi: Sticky rice cake/Yuanzi rice noodles/Milk tea with less sugar
5. 🥘Yanming Farmhouse: Shrimp paste/Spicy hotpot/Old grandma's potato/Fried snails
6. Impression Menghuan: Group buying is really cost-effective! Portions are super large
🥤🥤🥤Dessert section
1. I'm very busy: 🥑Avocado juice is really good
2. Zhangbian Fruit Drink: 🥑Avocado dessert
3. Kedomi: Mixed vegetables, pounded chicken feet, 🍓strawberry sauce
🌴It's still worth a visit if you're passing by on your way to Tengchong, the airport is very close, but there's nothing particularly outstanding, the snacks are okay, but the taste is not exceptional

Mang City doesn't boast or brag, but this Dawn City is worth revisiting, so make sure to bookmark it
Tourism is reviving, and the city whose popularity has risen the fastest is none other than Mang City.
Locals never expected such an explosive influx of tourists.
Mang City also has a beautiful name, 'Menghuan.'
It is said that when the Buddha arrived from afar, it was just at the break of dawn, hence the name 'Menghuan,' which translates to 'City of Dawn.'
On this trip, I want to share my genuine experience in Mang City with everyone.
Mang City is a slow-paced small town.
The authentic way to enjoy it is to ride a shared electric scooter, wander through the streets and alleys, look for delicious food, sit in a coffee shop for an afternoon, and experience the local customs. Overall, it's worth a second visit!
🚗How to get to Mang City?
🚘By car: Kunming—Dali—Baoshan—Mang City
✈️By plane: Direct flights to Mang City from various places
⚠️Tips on how to play in Mang City:
Mang City is a border town, not positioned as a tourist city, so there are not many attractions, and you can finish touring them quite quickly.
1⃣️Menghuan Golden Pagoda/Silver Pagoda
Landmark buildings of Mang City, separated by a parking lot, the scenic area is not large, and tickets are sold separately (40 on-site, 35 online).
✅Next to the parking lot, small shops rent Dai ethnic costumes for photos.
✅The Silver Pagoda is more photogenic, personally, I think it's enough to take pictures of the Golden Pagoda from the outside.
2⃣️Unity Street/Bodhi Street
Two rows of tall palm trees, full of Southeast Asian charm, Bodhi Street has a Bodhi Temple, worth a visit along the way.
✅Unity Street photo spot: Navigate to Plum Coffee, come out at the gap on the roadside.
✅Bodhi Street photo spot: Navigate to Mang City Hotel, the sidewalk in front of the door.
3⃣️Shubao Pagoda
An ancient tree with hundreds of years of history, with a pagoda wrapped by the tree.
✅The area around the ancient tree has become a parking lot, not a great environment.
4⃣️New Play Factory
A relatively modern check-in spot, with lots of graffiti, recommended to go in the evening when there is a night market for snacks.
5⃣️Dai Ethnic Ancient Town
A newly built village, I personally didn't like it and didn't go, but those who are interested can plan a visit.
6⃣️Shangjingkan Village
It's recommended to spend half a day visiting this Dai village, there is a 400+ year old huge banyan tree behind the mountain.
🐷Tips for Mang City cuisine:
Mostly Dai-flavored snacks, you can try different ones without repeating, but as someone from Sichuan, I wasn't too amazed.
✅Lin's Round Dumplings: Mainly beef dumpling soup, open for breakfast and dinner.
✅Lanlu Breakfast: Specializes in bait silk & rice noodles, need to queue up early.
✅Dreamy Dehong: Dai-flavored main meals, good taste, recommended to go early.
✅Xiaowacha Kitchen: Dai-flavored meals, it's advised to call ahead for reservations.
✅Best Food City: Gan Ying chicken feet, avocado juice, Paoluoda, Myanmar Shuaibababa, etc.
✅Hongli Comprehensive Market: Local market with fresh fruit.
✅Menshi Coffee: Delicious coffee, cup cards with Mang City labels.
✅Ah He Coffee: At the foot of the Golden and Silver Pagodas, very comfortable to bask in the sun.
🏠Accommodation in Mang City
There are many hotels in Mang City, ranging from one hundred to several hundred yuan, overall not expensive, to each their own.
🚗Transportation in Mang City
Taxis in Mang City are mainly called via Wanshun, but there are a lot of shared electric scooters, it's recommended to travel by small electric scooter, convenient and free.

I embarked on a journey of exotic charm in Mang City
1. The Mang City Golden Pagoda (Menghuan Big Golden Pagoda) is open until 10 pm, with an admission fee of 40 yuan. The pagoda is located on a mountain (you can ride a small electric scooter to the foot of the mountain, then walk 1 kilometer uphill). It can also be seen from some places at the foot of the mountain. I went there at night, and the close-up view at night is very beautiful. The inside of the pagoda is hollow, housing a large Buddhist hall. There is also an observation deck in the scenic area where you can see the cityscape. The estimated visiting time is about 30 minutes.
2. The Mang City Silver Pagoda (Menghuan Silver Pagoda) is very close to the Golden Pagoda, with an admission fee of 40 yuan. I visited during the day, and after entering, you have to climb a bit to get there. You cannot enter the Silver Pagoda, but you can see the Golden Pagoda while climbing the Silver Pagoda. If you don't want to go inside the Golden Pagoda, visiting the Silver Pagoda is also an option. Climbing the Silver Pagoda takes about 1 hour of visiting time.
3. Peacock Lake is very close to the foot of the Golden and Silver Pagoda mountains and is a local walking trail for exercise. It's a nice place to take a leisurely stroll if you have the time.
4. Bodhi Temple is accessible by a small electric scooter in the city, and it also houses a Buddhist hall. It's a nice spot to visit while wandering around the city, and there was no admission fee when I entered.
5. The Dai Minority Ancient Town is a commercial pedestrian street with an ethnic minority style. Going there in the evening to browse the night market, eat from a hot pot, and take a walk is a good choice.
6. Shubao Pagoda is a distinctive pagoda located in the city. The pagoda is inside a tree, and you can reach it by taking a walk during the day.
7. Mengbana Xi Rare Garden has an admission fee of 40 yuan. Inside, there are mostly bamboo forests to see, and the main attraction is to learn about some of the local precious timbers (silicified wood). The visit is quite enjoyable. There are also many peacocks raised inside, and you can get close to them (when I visited, the male peacocks were frantically displaying their feathers, which was very beautiful). The visiting time inside is about 1.5 hours.
8. Peacock Valley Forest Park is 15 kilometers away from the city by car. I drove there myself. The admission fee plus shuttle bus is 98 yuan per person, with a package ticket of 138 yuan (including all the chargeable attractions inside and the shuttle bus). If you don't buy the package ticket, some attractions inside require an additional fee: jungle leap is 20 yuan, glass tower is 10 yuan, and glass walkway is 30 yuan (you can bargain during the off-season). The Peacock Garden and Hundred Birds Garden do not require extra money. There are fixed-time peacock flying performances, and I watched the 12:30 show. There are also other animals to see, and a highlight is seeing the white peacocks. You can take close-up photos with the peacocks in the Peacock Garden. The visiting time is about 2-3 hours.
LEILA MAY
Jinggu Tree-wrapped Pagoda
The Mengwo Buddhist Temple Twin Pagoda, commonly known as the Tree-wrapped Pagoda and Pagoda-wrapped Tree, was initially built by Wei Yuan Tuguan Renhan Chen during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is a Buddhist pagoda of the Southern Transmission, with a square base, each side 4 meters long, made of red sandstone in the form of a multi-layered lotus. The pagoda body is made of green bricks in the shape of a gourd. The Tree-wrapped Pagoda is 10.7 meters high, and the pagoda has been wrapped by a Bodhi tree, with the tree crown about 25 meters high. The Pagoda-wrapped Tree is 7.2 meters high, and the Bodhi tree on the top of the pagoda is about 20 meters high. The bodies of the twin pagodas are carved with Buddhist stories, folk tales, and stone carvings of animals, plants, and flowers. It is a precious material for studying the religion, culture, and history of the Dai people, and has high historical and artistic value.

Successfully followed the trend to Mangshi for reverse tourism!
This Spring Festival came to Mangshi for reverse tourism
It's really the most successful trend-following time🥹
The Southeast Asian style of this border town is simply 💯
It's too suitable for dawdling, sunbathing and visiting temples!!
1️⃣Menghuan Gold Tower/Menghuan Silver Tower
If you like to take photos, I recommend the Silver Tower more, you can overlook the two big towers from the top, very Southeast Asian, the Silver Tower is very photogenic!
🌅It's best to go around 10 o'clock in the morning or around 6 o'clock in the afternoon, it won't be very hot and the sunlight is also soft~
2️⃣Tree Wrapped Tower
🌳The first sight is super shocking!! The big tree wraps around the tower body and grows, but the tower only has cracks but does not break, sitting under the tree to rest is very calming.
3️⃣Hongli Comprehensive Market
🥭I really became a fruit expert in Mangshi! This vegetable market is very regular, there are also fair scales and so on, the variety of fruits is rich and super sweet!
4️⃣Unity Street
🌴You can see the plane flying low! Both sides are full of coconut trees! It has the taste of a Southeast Asian tropical small town.
5️⃣Tea Bran Shampoo
💆You must must experience!! With shoulder and neck massage, it's very cheap! During the Spring Festival, those popular stores either closed or were full, so I randomly chose one across the market, all are Burmese little sisters who press very comfortably✌️
TranquilDestinations
People are asking like crazy if this is Thailand, it's Thailand's Mang City!
Mang City is not busy, a slow-paced border town!
📍Detailed address:
Menghuan Big Golden Pagoda As the westernmost border town in Yunnan, Mang City is also the capital of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture.
This small city is home to five ethnic minorities and Han people who have lived here for generations. The rich and colorful ethnic culture and beliefs have long been integrated into life.
🚉Travel Guide:
To fly directly to Mang City, you need to transfer in Kunming.
👍Most Recommended:
Menghuan Big Golden Pagoda
China's first golden Buddha pagoda, Asia's first hollow Buddha pagoda. The golden light is dazzling, the view is spectacular and sacred, the ticket is 38 yuan, you can see it from the city, under the sun, opposite the big golden pagoda, is a privately built scenic spot, which is also very spectacular, the white pagoda body is very photogenic, and you can see the golden pagoda opposite, suitable for punching!
Mengbana Xi Zhenqi Garden
This is a private scenic spot, it feels more like a private garden, there are all kinds of rare animals and plants inside, the most interesting thing is the peacocks that are free-range in the park, occasionally you can see peacocks opening their screens!
Tree Wrapped Pagoda
At first glance, it's a huge bodhi tree, but there's a pagoda hidden inside, the pagoda is under the tree, the tree is wrapped around the pagoda, the top is lush, the bottom is the Buddha pagoda shining, it's a unique view in the pagoda.
New Play Factory
Cultural and creative area, there are many food murals, many local snacks, the fruit here is also very cheap!
Bodhi Temple
Han Dai style architecture, the temple is not big, very photogenic
Unity Street
It's right there at the Bodhi Temple, both sides are tall coconut trees, a strong Southeast Asian style!
About Accommodation
It is recommended to stay near Mang City Square or Unity Street, where there are many homestays, about 50 per person, the most important thing is that it is convenient to go anywhere.
📝Note tips:
Mang City is not big, it's very suitable for a weekend getaway, it's recommended to rent an electric car and you can run the whole city.

A spectacle of man-made and natural wonders
There is a tree-wrapped tower in Mangshi that is worth seeing. This tower, originally named Tiecheng Tower, was built by the 17th Tusi of Mangshi, Fang Yu, to commemorate a victory in a war, about two hundred years ago.
Tiecheng Tower is a brick and stone tower, about ten meters high, octagonal in shape, with Buddha statues standing in the niches, not much different from the stone towers we often see.
What's amazing is that after a long time of wind and sun, cracks appeared in the brick tower. And a banyan tree seed, by chance, was brought to the tower crack by the wind or a bird. Under the nourishment of spring rain, the tenacious seed sprouted and grew into a towering tree. So the ancient tower was gradually wrapped by the banyan tree, forming the spectacle of the tree-wrapped tower. It is said that walking around the tower clockwise three times will bring good luck.
Address: 100 meters west of the intersection of Yonghan Street and Baobo Road, Mangshi, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province
Opening hours: all day
Admission: free

Mangshi two-day one-night city walk (with guide)
Mangshi is not big, walking around for 2 days is enough
But if you want to eat well, it will take several days😄
Share my 2-day tour itinerary from Tengchong to Mangshi
🌆Mangshi is not big, a small walk can solve all transportation problems
❤️Day one
Depart from Tengchong in the morning, arrive in Mangshi at noon, and start with a small walk!
1️⃣Lunch: Best Food City
Gan Ying chicken feet, I personally think it is mediocre, but their drinks are really good! I had milk tea, avocado milkshake, strawberry, all great!
Shuaibababa, similar to the taste of Indian flying cake
2️⃣Silver Tower photo
If you want to take pictures, remember to make an appointment in advance, the popular ones have no vacancies on the spot, I found randomly at the door
Then it's gone for half a day🙃
3️⃣Ah, drink coffee
The photo ended late, did not go to the Tianye store, just rested at the one under the Silver Tower
4️⃣New playground night market, internet celebrity wall photo
Forget about eating, it's a standard food street nationwide
5️⃣Ah Miao Restaurant, highly recommended!!! Please be sure to 🐛!
6️⃣Walk on the roadside to digest, the night view is good at night, the square dance is very ethnic, similar to the bamboo pole dance
7️⃣Qiao Yan Bao Ying barbecue, too full, didn't eat much, and it's too inside, scared at night!

Tree Wrapped Pagoda| The pagoda is topped with a tree, and the tree wraps around the pagoda
The Iron City Buddha Pagoda, in Dai language 'Guangmujielie', was first built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. After several renovations in 1740, 1788, 1985, it was announced as the seventh batch of cultural relics protection units in Yunnan Province on January 7, 2012! Because there is a towering ancient banyan tree on the pagoda, the twisted roots have wrapped most of the pagoda, so it is also called 'Tree Wrapped Pagoda'!

Mangshi, Yunnan| Time is slow, Mangshi is not busy
Mangshi, the capital of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, is the most southwestern border town in Yunnan, where five ethnic minorities and Han people have lived for generations. It is located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, belongs to the South Asian monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 20°C, which can be described as 'no severe cold in winter, no extreme heat in summer, flowers bloom all year round, and fruits are produced all year round'. Mangshi was formerly known as 'Menghuan', which means 'City of Dawn' in Dai language. It is said that when Buddha came to Mangshi, the sky was just dawning, and what he saw was the dawn, which also represents hope and devotion.
The landmark of Mangshi, 'Menghuan Golden Pagoda', is the first golden Buddha pagoda in China and the first hollow Buddha pagoda in Asia.
Menghuan Silver Pagoda, if the golden pagoda is regarded as the sun of Mangshi, the silver pagoda is the moon. The two look at each other, guarding this small city together.
Bodhi Temple, a Theravada Buddhist temple, is also a well-preserved Southern Buddhist temple.
Tree-wrapped Pagoda, there is a pagoda in the tree, and a tree in the pagoda, which makes people marvel at the wonder of nature. The 'Tree-wrapped Pagoda', also known as the 'Iron City Buddha Pagoda', is said to have been built by the 17th Tusi of Mangshi to commemorate the victory of a war, which is about two hundred years ago.
Mangshi Street, Bodhi Street, the city overlooks from the Golden Pagoda viewing platform, and the street scene in the direction of Tengchong when leaving Mangshi.
