Shiwahiko Shrine is adjacent to Shiogama Shrine. Although smaller in scale, there is a garden on the hillside in front of the shrine with pine trees, small bridges, and flowing water. Additionally, you can enjoy a partial view of Shiogama Bay from a high vantage point. When visiting Shiogama Shrine, don't miss this viewpoint. Transportation: 20-minute walk from Hon-Shiogama Station, via the Shiogama Shrine approach.

Quick Trip to Sendai, Japan: Shiogama Shrine in Miyagi Prefecture (Ichinomiya)
Shiogama Shrine is the Ichinomiya of Miyagi Prefecture, located on a small hill in Shiogama City (also known as Shiogama City in Japanese), northeast of Sendai City. Although it takes a 15-20 minute walk plus a climb up the hill from the train station, many people still visit. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the shrine from either JR Tohoku Main Line's 'Shiogama Station' or Senseki Line's 'Hon-Shiogama Station'.

A Tour of Matsushima, One of Japan's Three Scenic Views: The Old Kamei Residence in Miyagi Prefecture.
The Old Kamei Residence is located at the foot of the path leading to Shiogama Shrine, about a 5-10 minute walk from Hon-Shiogama Station. This small house was built by a maritime merchant in the early 20th century, using a combination of Japanese and Western architectural styles. However, for visitors from Hong Kong, the Japanese style of both the interior and exterior is very apparent, unlike the distinctly Western-style buildings in places like Moji Port.

Sushi Tetsu (Shiogama Sushi Tetsu)
#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025
Sushi Tetsu Honten is located in Shiogama City. You can take the JR Senseki Line from Sendai Station to Hon-Shiogama Station, and walk for 3 minutes from the station. We arrived at around 4pm and the store was almost full, which shows that there must be a lot of people during meal time.
The store offers a variety of nigiri sushi sets, sashimi rice bowls and cooked food. I ordered a sushi-tetsu nigiri set. I asked the waiter not to add wasabi, but maybe because of the language barrier, it became "not to eat raw", which I thought was a pity. There were 12 pieces of sushi in total. I don't know if it's because they were all cooked food, but I felt it tasted very ordinary, and it cost about NT$1,000, which I felt was a bit expensive. I sat at the bar to dine. I don't like to dip food in soy sauce, but the chef would remind me to dip it in soy sauce and would also ask if it tasted good. I felt a little pressured.
There is also a Sushi Tetsu branch at B1 of S-PAL Department Store at Sendai Station. You don't have to go there specifically to eat at this restaurant, unless you just pass by it.

💞Reasons why we recommend it: This shrine was revered by the Oshu Fujiwara clan in the Middle Ages and the Date clan in the early modern period, and it is generally written as Shiogama Shrine, not Shiogama Shrine😘
It is said that it was started by Shiodome Ojin, who introduced salt production to this area‼︎
In fact, just across the road from Shiogama Shrine is Okama Shrine, where the sacred treasure, the sacred hearth, is enshrined, so it is a good idea to visit both🫣

Shiogama Seafood Wholesale Market in Shiogama is a popular spot where you can find fresh seafood.
There are many shops in the market, but Matsuoka Shoten in particular has a reputation for its delicious food!
With a wide variety of fresh seafood, you can enjoy making your own original bowl of rice by choosing your favorite ingredients.
The quality of the seafood delivered directly from Shiogama Port is amazing. The lively atmosphere unique to the market is also appealing!
Enjoy the fresh flavors at Shiogama Seafood Wholesale Market, which will satisfy both your stomach and your heart.
The tuna at Matsuoka Shoten was especially delicious, so be sure to try it if you visit!

Shiogama Shrine in Shiogama City is one of the most historic and traditional shrines not only in Miyagi but also in the Tohoku region.
In the Middle Ages, the Oshu Fujiwara clan and the Date clan of the Sendai domain were deeply religious at the shrine.
The main deity enshrined is Shiotsuchioji-no-kami. He is the god who taught people how to make salt, and in mythology, he played the role of a "signpost" for the characters.
The Shiogama Minato Festival, one of Japan's three major boat festivals, is held every July and starts at Shiogama Shrine. A portable shrine is carried down the stone steps of the main approach to the shrine, through the city, and then tours Matsushima Bay accompanied by about 100 boats.

First Time in Sendai: A Relaxing Visit to Shiogama Shrine and Nature Walks
A girls' trip to relax and unwind from daily stress with friends.
Since it's a special occasion, we decided to go somewhere neither of us had been before! So, we embarked on our first trip to Tohoku, heading to Sendai.
Recommended by our taxi driver, we visited Shiogama Shrine, a place rich in history and surrounded by beautiful nature. Despite the hot season, the shrine grounds felt cool, enveloped in greenery that soothed our hearts. The serene atmosphere made it an ideal spot to enjoy the calmness of an adult trip. After paying our respects, we took a leisurely stroll, immersing ourselves in nature, which allowed us to forget the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy a peaceful, tranquil time.

Shiogama Shrine - A Must-Visit Attraction in Miyagi, Japan
The Shiogama Shrine, located in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, is an exceptional shrine outside of the system, and serves as the Ichinomiya (primary shrine) of the Mutsu Province.
This shrine is the head shrine of approximately 110 Shiogama Shrines across Japan. During the Meiji era, the Shiwahiko Shrine, which was an official shrine within the system, was relocated to this site.
Now, both shrines reside within the same precincts, collectively known as Shiwahiko Shrine & Shiogama Shrine. Formerly classified as a National Shrine of Medium Rank, it is currently listed as a separate shrine by the Association of Shinto Shrines, with the 'Shiogama Sakura' as its emblematic crest.

[Okama Shrine/Miyagi Prefecture] A shrine that contains the sacred kama, or sacred stove.
Okama Shrine in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture
𓂃◌𓈒𓐍 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃
Okama Shrine is a sub-shrine outside the grounds of Shiogama Shrine.
It is located close to Shiogama Shrine, less than a 5-minute walk away!
The deity worshipped here is the same as that of Shiogama Shrine, Shiotsuchioji-no-kami, the god who taught and spread the knowledge of how to make salt.
In the grounds there is a four-burner iron hearth called Okama or Kamikama.
There are two kettles with a diameter of about 1.4m lined up in parallel at the front and back.
The kettle is filled to the brim with water, and there is a legend about it⬇️
"The water in the kettle never overflows or dries up."
"If something unusual happens, the color of the water in the kettle changes."
This sacred kettle is usually closed, but you can pay 100 yen at the shrine office and ask to see it!
(Photos taken by 🙅♀️)
In July, the Okama Shrine annual festival and the Moshio-yaki ritual are held.
